Page 36 The Dispatch/Maryland Coast Dispatch November 8, 2013 Council decided to table the USRA’s request to hold the OC Beach to Boardwalk Half Marathon and 5K in Ocean City on March 9, 2014, due to concerns over the proposed route and the associated costs to the town of $4,500. The Half Marathon was proposed take place on the Boardwalk, Baltimore Avenue, Coastal Highway and the beach, while the 5K would take place completely on the Boardwalk and concrete pad. This week Dean Reinke of USRA visited Ocean City to run the proposed route but the course on the beach concerned him over the welfare of the event’s runners. He asked to return with an alternative route, such as a two-loop course only on the Boardwalk. In the meantime, the Mayor and City Council voted unanimously to approve a date hold for the event with the route to be approved at a later date. Ocean City News In Brief BY JOANNE SHRINER Staff Writer Community Walk Success The Jesse Klump Memorial Fund is a non-profit association for suicide prevention. The second annual walk on the Boardwalk to raise money for and awareness of suicide prevention was held on Sept. 28. Director Ronald Pilling approached the Mayor and City Council to share a few highlights from this year’s event, including that 300 participants took part and that more than $38,000 was raised. The beneficiaries are the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and the memorial fund, which operates the Worcester County Youth Suicide Awareness and Prevention Program. “The areas people come from have their own suicide prevention walks but folks choose to come to Ocean City to walk with us on the Boardwalk,” Pilling said. “It seems that you are as responsible for the walk as we are because you made Ocean City and keep Ocean City a place people want to be.” According to Ryan Newcomb of AFSP, over the past two years the Out of Darkness Walk in Ocean City has raised over $56,000 that will be returned to the local communities in the form of grants. “This will enable us to increase our efforts in partnership with JKMF and the Worcester County Health Department to stem the tide of suicides on the lower eastern shore, and to bring some major compassion to those who lost loved ones to suicide,” Newcomb said. OCEAN CITY – Among the issues briefly discussed at this week’s Mayor and Council meeting were the speed limit being officially lowered on Coastal Highway, the success of 2nd Annual Out of the Darkness is announced, a save the date request an upcoming running event and Beach Blitz Soccer is postponed until 2014. According to SHA transportation engineer Dallas Baker, 85 percent of drivers traveled 37 mph or less and 50 percent of drivers traveled 33 mph or less, and the Office of Traffic and Safety and the chief engineer approved the request to lower the speed limit from 33rd to 62nd streets from 40 mph to 35 mph. Beach Soccer Event Postponed Ocean City Beach Blitz Soccer is a one-day adult and youth beach soccer tournament on the beach from north of Dorchester to 2nd streets originally scheduled for Aug. 24, 2013. Private Events Coordinator Lisa Mitchell explained the Mayor and City Council approved the event on May 6, 2013. However, the applicant felt he did not have enough time to properly promote the event and has asked to postpone it and reschedule for Aug. 23, 2014.
