What are the most important considerations when
designing a yarn?

I focus on fiber content, feel, uniqueness, color range
and cost.

In your opinion, what makes a yarn a winner?

I think successful yarns offer the buyer something
truly unique. They bring a combination of interesting
and unusual qualities. Anything that makes a yarn
special can set it apart - be it an unusual blend of
fibers, an interesting twist, or a soft, luxurious hand.
For this reason, I have very high hopes for our new
sock yarn since it offers many unique qualities - it
is made with wool from Merino sheep grazing in the
fields of North America, it is spun in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, and then dyed in North Carolina using
only natural dye materials. And, it
's gorgeous!
In The Works
We all wear many hats at Skacel, but Chuck Wilmesher is the official Director of Product Development. One of
his main duties involves creating innovative yarns for the HiKoo
TM line, which we develop in-house. We asked
him a few questions about his process and the latest products in the pipeline, including the naturally dyed yarn
pictured below. Learn how these beautiful raw materials become an exciting, American-made sock yarn.
What hopes do you have for American wool?

I really hope the American wool market grows, and
that we can start producing more of our own yarn here
in the United States. When I first started looking into
American textile production, I was shocked at how
difficult it was to find a mill with the capability and
willingness to spin yarn the way we needed it done.

What is your favorite part of the process?

Selecting the colors for a yarn and then seeing them for
the first time. Every time yarn samples arrive, it feels
like Christmas morning when I was 7!

If you were a yarn, what kind of yarn would you be?

I would be a blend of cashmere, silk and merino. Soft,
strong and shiny!
