During campaign years, volunteers are sought at campaign headquarters or interested youth can compete for a delegate position as a National Convention delegates. At the local level, students can engage in politics within their schools and run for class president or other student body positions. Politics at Home While it isn’t necessary for every teen to strive to be among the delegates at a national convention or even run for student president, it is imperative we lead by example and ensure that our children understand the privilege of voting. Family dinners are a perfect opportunity to discuss how issues impact older teens. For younger teens, use analogies they can relate to and be sure to use simple terms. Developing the skills required to comprehend the issues facing the nation will help set the foundation for our future voters. If you doubt the power of the young voter, consider this, CIRCLE reports that without the youth vote, Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, would have flipped from a Blue to a Red state. We all know that children model their behavior after the adults in their life, primarily their parents. Be sure to model good citizenship. If you pay attention to current issues, chances are your children will as well. Consume news and let your kids see you consume news. Make sure your children observe to reading the paper, watching, or listening the news. Discuss politics. As your children observe your behavior they may start to ask questions. Use dinnertime to engage in discussions Take your kids with you to vote. And if they are young, explain to them what you are doing and why it is important Play an active role in your community.
