GUIDELINES
Air Duct Systems designed for grain and feed dust require a minimum of 4,000 CFM per
square foot to keep dust from settling out in horizontal runs. Math for 8" duct: radius
squared equals 16 x 3.14 = 50 square inches divided by 144 (sq. inches per ft.) = .35 x
4000 = 1400 CFM would be required to prevent grain dust from settling in horizontal duct.
On sawdust (a different material) use 4500 CFM. If you use the formula, a 4" duct would
require 400 CFM. When designing systems, avoid using odd diameter duct (i.e. 9", 11", 13",
15") since even sizes cost much less.
