May 10, 2013 The Dispatch/Maryland Coast Dispatch Page 79 ACTPlant Festival Set For Saturday BERLIN – The Assateague Coastal Trust (ACT) is holding its 14th Annual Native and Heirloom Plant Festival this Saturday, May 11, at the ACT office in Berlin at 9931 Old Ocean City Blvd. Holding the Festival the day before Mothers Day provides customers with the opportunity to honor Mom with a beautiful gift that keeps on giving. The festival begins at 8 a.m. and will be held in the lot next to ACT's office, steps from the corner of Old Ocean City Blvd. and North Main Street in Berlin. There will be a wide variety of locally native perennial plants for sale, as well as herbs and heirloom tomatoes. Native or indigenous plants are those that naturally occur in our coastal and Chesapeake Bay watersheds. Using native plants will increase the chances that the plants will thrive in your yard, as they are suited to our soils; require less watering than non-natives, and are able to make better use of rainwater; and benefit local and migratory wildlife that use native plant species for food, cover, and rearing young. Besides the plants themselves, local craftspeople will be exhibiting their Mom-friendly work for sale. Coast Kids will have a booth at the Festival where folks may purchase several plants or herbs to put into a pot, add a bow and a clever coastal decoration made by the kids, to take home to Mom.
