SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity lacrosse team was named co-Bayside Conference champions with Queen Anne’s this week after foul weather forced the cancellation of Tuesday’s highly anticipated conference championship game with the Vikings at Wicomico Stadium. The Seahawks wrapped up the regular season last Friday with a narrow 7-6 win over Parkside. Annie Brown and Eileen Hayman each scored two goals to lead Decatur. The Seahawks started the season with a 5-4 win over the Rams and closed it out with the 7-6 victory in the regular season finale. The win over Parkside last Friday clinched the Bayside South title for the Seahawks, who finished the regular season with a 10-2 mark, and set up a rematch with Queen Anne’s in the conference championship game set for Tuesday night. Queen Anne’s handed the Seahawks one of just two losses all season with a 13-8 win back on April 10. The Seahawks would have had a chance to avenge that loss on Tuesday, but bad weather and poor field conditions forced the Bayside championship game to be postponed. As a result, the Seahawks were named co-conference champions with the Vikings although there appears to be an opportunity to settle that score in the state playoffs. The state Class 3A-2A East brackets were released on Monday and Decatur and Queen Anne’s appear to be on a collision course. Decatur was named the number-two seed in the east sectional and earned a first-round bye. The Seahawks will play third-seeded Bennett in the second round at home this afternoon. The Decatur girls have already beaten Bennett twice this season, including a 14-3 win back on April 3 and a 17-4 win last week. Lurking on the other side of the bracket is top-seeded Queen Anne’s, who will face fourth-seeded Northeast in the second round. If both teams prevail as expected, Decatur and Queen Anne’s could match up in the east sectional title game next week. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team overcame a three-game losing streak to close out the regular season by rebounding with a 13-3 win over familiar rival Salisbury School on Tuesday in the first game of the postseason. The Mallards dropped their last three games of the regular season to Indian River (10-8), Wilmington Friends (12-9) and St. Andrew’s (10-6). However, Worcester regrouped on Tuesday to move on in the MILL tournament with a 13- 3 win over Salisbury School. Harrison Brennan scored five goals and dished out an assist, and also won eight of nine face-offs. Gordon Abercrombie scored twice and added an assist, while Wade Walter recorded seven saves. The Mallards played Calverton in the second round yesterday in a game played too late to be included in this edition. Tuesday’s win over Salisbury School was the Mallards’ third of the season against the Dragons. With Tuesday’s win, Worcester’s season record improved to 7-9. After losing their first four, the Mallards went 7-5 down the stretch. BERLIN – With a little assistance from Mother Nature, Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team this week earned a share of the Bayside Conference championship after rain washed out the title game rematch with Kent Island on Tuesday. Last year, the Seahawks edged the Buccaneers, 10-9, in a dramatic Bayside Conference championship game and the two teams were on a collision course for a repeat performance on Tuesday before conference officials decided to postpone the contest due to continued bad weather. As a result, Decatur, which won the Bayside South title, and Kent Island, which won the Bayside North title, were named co-conference champions on Tuesday afternoon after the title game was rained out and not rescheduled. The Seahawks finished the regular season with an 11-3 record and won its last seven games down the stretch to clinch the Bay- side South title. Decatur closed out the regular season with a 1510 win over Bennett last Wednesday and a 14-8 win over old rival Parkside in the season finale at home last Friday. Despite the cancellation of Tuesday’s conference championship game against Kent Island, the Seahawks will likely have an opportunity to face the Buccaneers again in the state playoffs. Kent Island went 11-1 on the season and beat Decatur, 10-7, way back on March 26. When the state Class 3A-2A East region brackets were released on Monday, Decatur had earned a number-two seed and will face Easton at home in its first postseason game this afternoon. The Seahawks beat Easton, 1311, on April 19. Should the Seahawks get past the Warriors, they would likely face Kent Island in the eastern sectional quarterfinals. Kent Island is the top seed in the east sectional and will face the winner of the first-round game between Bennett and Queen Anne’s. Decatur Earns Three-Seed In East By SHAWN J. Nonetheless, the Seahawks earned a number-two seed in the state Class 3A-East region tournament when the brackets were released this week and will face the winner of the first-round game between Reservoir and Hammond at home next Monday. River Hill is the third seed and Bennett is the fourth seed. Northeast is the top seed in the 3A-East region tournament. BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team dropped a pair of close games to Bayside South rivals this week to close out the regular season, but earned a number-three seed in the state Class 3A-East region tournament when the brackets were released on Wednesday. The Seahawks fell to Parkside, 3-1, last Friday in a tight, wellplayed game by both teams. Decatur’s Grant Donohue was matching the Rams’ starter scoreless inning after scoreless inning until the Seahawks broke through in the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Jacob Hickman scored Chase Cour- sey to break up the 0-0 tie and briefly gave the Seahawks the lead. However, the Rams scored three times in the fifth and held on for the 3-1 win. Against Bennett on Monday in a make-up game, the Seahawks fell to the Clippers in another tight game, 2-1. Decatur earned a number-three seed when the Class 3A-East brackets were released on Wednesday and a first-round bye. The Seahawks will face the winner of the first-round matchup between Mt. Hebron and Annapolis. Atholton is the number-two seed on Decatur’s side of the bracket and lurking on the other side is topseeded Bennett, which has beaten Decatur twice this season.
