village shop, excellent holiday cottage
accommodation, and a terrific new village
hall, and is a lovely place to live."
to the A379 starts with a bit of a loose rocky
climb for starters, no problem in the summer
after a bit of dry weather, but would be more
of a challenge in the winter. It is one of those
lanes in Devon that annoyingly has a sign at
the start that says "to footpath"; the "to" easily
missed by the casual observer, who, if passed
by a bike, is easily misled into thinking some
kind of crazed hell's angel is riding roughshod
over the good laws of the land. There are never
"to Byway" signs are there? Poor signage is
something we need to be, and are, trying to
sort out as part of Devon TRF's investment of
money raised by its members.

didn't run down through Maidencombe to get
a better view of the English Channel sparkling
in the distance. Instead I cruised into Torquay,
the English Riviera, past Babbacombe model
village, Oddicombe Beach, Anstey's Cove and
Kent's Cavern, carved out of a limestone
outcrop within the mostly metamorphic and
granitic Devonian geology. June is early season
for the seaside tourist industry. Outside of
school holidays, traffic is light, with visitors
comprising families with pre-school kiddies or
retired folk mostly on coach tours it seemed. For
all of the old person image associated with the
Devon coastal resorts, I love them, for being
beside the sea if nothing else. Dropping down
to the front, past the marina and Living Coast
tourist attraction, Torquay seamlessly segues
into Paignton with its pier and famous
