poignant reminder of our violent history with a
US Sherman Tank commemorating the loss of
750 lives after German E-boats torpedoed a
full dress rehearsal for the D Day landing in
Exercise Tiger, on 28th April 1944. On a
perfect mid June day it was hard to imagine the
carnage that occurred over 70 years ago. The
story of Ken Small who recovered the Sherman
is worthy of a read in itself.
At Torcross at the far southern end of the spit,
the A379 turns inland to Stokenham and now
I was into uncharted territory, all new lanes and
plenty of them. A number of byways led off the
main road and I took in a few rutted, grassy
lanes down to Kernborough before looping
back to an easy byway in Chillington before
dropping down into Frogmore where a number
of UCRs led up onto some downland with
tantalising glimpses of the Kingsbridge estuary
in the valley below. A bit of toing and froing
was necessary to take them all in, tucked
between hedgerows enclosing wheat fields,
now fully grown with well developed seed
heads, though still green, awaiting another
month of sun to ripen them to a golden harvest.
The lanes were wide, with rock bases which
became a bit slippery and stony as they
dropped off the hillside. They amount to about
3 miles of unmetalled road and finally brought
me down to another arm of the estuary just
outside Kingsbridge before an excellent
steepish climb up a byway at Dodbrooke and
back down into the town. Being dry, it was an
easy ride, but in the depths of winter, the
exposed rocks covered in a thin film of red mud
would be a different prospect. Kingsbridge
itself is a very pretty town, besides the water,
reminding me a bit of Looe in Cornwall. Plenty
of sightseers, icecream shops and cafes. I took
the opportunity to refuel at a garage on the
road out of the town and bought a sarnie for
lunch, jamming it in the back pocket of the
View across to East Portlemouth
