• Worked with the FDA to better understand the agency requirements on development and use of biologics. • Continued to defend payment values for many plastic surgery procedures, including soft tissue tumor excisions, complex wound repairs, island pedicle flaps and burn debridement. • Convinced Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to change its policy to approve bilateral reimbursement for biologic implant for soft tissue reinforcement. • Educated members and payers on correct usage of new CPT codes for skin substitutes, biologic implants, and collagenase injections. • Convinced third-party payers to cover injectable collagenase clostridium for the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture (up to three injections may be considered medically necessary). • Provided educational resources to assist members in compliance with HIPAA 5010 and the Medicare PQRS, e-prescribing and Electronic Health Record incentive programs. • Convinced CMS to increase the units of service allowed for seven cheek bone and orbital fracture payment codes. • Submitted comments to third-party payers on proposed coverage policies for surgical and ablative treatments for chronic headaches and gender reassignment surgery. • Represented plastic surgery’s interests at the National Quality Forum (NQF), the Surgical Quality Alliance (SQA), and the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement (PCPI). • Contributed to joint CMS/Alliance of Specialty Medicine “Super User” training sessions on Quality and Resource Use Reports (QRURs). • Developed online resources to help members navigate Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). • Collaborated with the SQA on drafting public reporting guidelines. HEALTH POLICY AND YOUR PRACTICE • Developed evidence-based Clinical Practice Guidelines for Post-Mastectomy Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction. • Developed a PSEN interactive online CME course on Patient Safety. • Updated and redesigned the ASPS patient Informed Consent Resource on CD and for online download. • Developed evidence-based Clinical Practice Guiding Principles on Post-Mastectomy Fat Graft/Fat Transfer.
