The P SF WorkS h oP S erieS career FundamenTalS WorkShoP residents and junior faculty receive help directing their careers as academic surgeons and receive guidance on everything from being competitive for an assistant professorship to thriving in their first five to seven years after residency. the 2012 Career Fundamentals workshop, led by paul Cederna, MD and James Bradley, MD, was held in ann arbor, MI in June 2012. granT menToring WorkShoP the pSF matches seasoned researchers with principal Investigators (pI) whose grant proposals were not funded or who are applying to the pSF or other funding agencies for grants in the upcoming cycle. established researchers review the grant proposals ahead of time and then meet with the pIs to give them advice on how the proposals could be strengthened or improved. the goal is to have the pIs incorporate suggestions and then submit or resubmit their grant proposals for the next funding cycle. the 2012 Grant Mentoring workshop, led by paul Cederna, MD and howard levinson, MD was a huge success, with 11 applicants receiving mentoring. granT WriTing WorkShoP established researchers give talks to less experienced pIs who are learning the skills to compete for extramural funding. the goal of this workshop is to provide pIs with the skills required to prepare a competitive, thoughtful, comprehensive and compelling research grant. this workshop, held during the plastic Surgery the Meeting, provided an opportunity for over 30 upcoming plastic surgery researchers to learn how to successfully navigate the competitive landscape of getting research funded from some of plastic surgery’s most successful researchers. FundamenTalS oF reSearch WorkShoP Seasoned researchers teach this instructional course to plastic surgeons interested in learning more about conducting research. the objectives are: (1) to understand how IrB regulations affect plastic surgery research; (2) to be able to incorporate evidence-based medicine into a research design; (3) to understand the pSF grant funding process; and (4) to discuss the elements of a successful grant proposal.
