St. Martin’s Church To Host Feast
BERLIN – The Feast of St. Martin’s is a celebration of the earth’s bounty, marking the end of the agrarian year and the start of harvesting. It has been a time when people eat and drink heartily before the onset of winter. Historic St. Martin’s Church will hail the day with a fall feast on Friday, Nov. 1. Sherrie Beckstead, president of Historic St. Martin’s Board of Directors, reports a committee is planning a festive evening with a menu based on local foods from land and sea, hearty drinks and live music. "This is the third year that we have held this event,” said Beckstead. “We hold the celebration at the site because it's such a beautiful place and it allows us to showcase the restoration and continuing preservation of St. Martin's.” St. Martin’s Church was built in the mid-1700s, but records indicate there had been an earlier building at the same location as early as 1703. The present structure was paid for with 85,000 pounds of tobacco. Proceeds from the event will go to the ongoing preservation of the 18th-century building and to the new public facilities at the site. Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $125 per person.
