SOPER SPORTS EDITOR Monday-Friday at 4 p.m. Saturday & Sunday at Noon WALK-IN OR CALL 410-250-3131 (Available in J/R’s 131st Street Only) BERLIN – With a stifling defense and just enough offense, led by the dynamic P.J. Copes, Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team picked up a big win on the road against a tough Bayside North opponent last Friday, beating Cambridge-South Dorchester, 12-7, to improve to 2-1 on the season. After beating Delaware powerhouse Indian River, 30-28, in the season opener for the first time in the long series, Decatur fell in week two to Queen Anne’s to drop to 1-1. The Seahawks began a critical stretch of the season against difficult Bayside North teams last Friday on the road against CambridgeSouth Dorchester and turned in a solid defensive performance and a 12-7 win. Decatur got on the board with an eight-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Meekins to Shawny’e Jones for a 6-0 lead. The Seahawks were dominating on defense for much of the game and kept the Vikings from getting a sniff of the end zone. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Decatur’s Chase Sams intercepted a pass at the Viking 26-yard line. Copes, who rushed for 176 yards on 23 carries during the game, ran the ball down to the Viking one-yard line and Taveyon Mills dove it in from there to stake the Seahawks to a 12-0 lead in the fourth. Cambridge-South Dorchester went on a seven-play, 74-yard drive in the fourth to cut the Seahawk lead to 12-7, but that was as close as the Vikings would get. Twice in the fourth quarter, Decatur punter Andrew Borradaile pinned the Vikings inside their own one-yard line and the Seahawk defense did the rest. Cambridge-South Dorchester mounted one last big drive, pushing to the Decatur 22-yard line late in the fourth, but back-to-back sacks by the Seahawks stalled the drive. The Vikings punted back to Decatur late in the game in the hopes of getting a three-and-out and one last chance, but the Seahawk offense was able to kill the clock and hold on for the 12-7 win. With the win, Decatur improved to 2-1 on the season. The Seahawks will face Kent Island on the road on Friday night.
