SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – After dropping its season opener to North Caroline, Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity soccer team has now reeled off four straight wins to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Seahawks four-game streak continued this week with a 2-0 win over Queen Anne’s last Friday and a 7-1 win over Crisfield on Tuesday. Against Queen Anne’s Danny Beck and David Bernal-Clark each scored single goals. Keeper Logan Thumma recorded 10 saves in the shutout win. On Tuesday, the Seahawks thrashed Crisfield, 7-1. Nick White led the attack with three goals, while Evan Heim scored twice. Corey Gwin and Bernal-Clark each added single tallies. Thumma was again outstanding in the net, recording 11 saves. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity cross-country teams turned in strong performances in the Bayside Conference meets they hosted last week with each finishing in third place among the schools entered. Decatur hosted a cross-country meet last Wednesday and the team results in the boys’ and girls’ competitions were nearly identical. Kent Island won the boys’ meet with a low team score of 25, followed by Cambridge-South Dorchester at 59 and Decatur with 65. In the girls’ meet, Kent Island finished first with 30 team points, followed by Cambridge-South Dor- chester with 56 and Decatur with 71. The Decatur boys had six individual runners finish in the top 25, including Jake Gaddis, who came in fifth. Kevin Herbert was 10th, John Niedfeldt was 12th, Jake Eisenman was 21st, Cameron James was 23rd and Parker Harrington was 25th. On the girls’ side, Chloe FauntLeroy turned in the best individual performance, finishing in ninth overall, while Katie Collins was 11th and Alison Alvarado was 14th. Other Seahawks to finish in the top 25 included Alexandra Tushup (19th), Jordan Klebbe (22nd), Kayla Lorance (23rd) and Meya Chilengi (25th). By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team lost its first game of the young season this week, falling to Bennett, 5-2, at home on Monday. Decatur entered the contest with a perfect 3-0 mark after early season wins over Queen Anne’s, Kent Island and Mardela, but fell to the visiting Clippers on Monday. Coach Misty Bunting said the Seahawks had some missed opportunities in the offensive end and a couple of communication breakdowns in the defensive end. Payton VanKirk and Brigitte Ardis each scored single goals for the Seahawks, while Rachel Florek was solid in the net with six saves. Mallards Fall To Salisbury Christian, Cape By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity soccer team lost its first two games of the season this week to drop to 5-2-1 on the year. The Mallards got off to a fast start to the season winning five games and losing none with the only blemish a 2-2 tie with Delmar back on Sept. 13. Last week, the Mallards beat Delmarva Christian, 7-2, on the strength of five first-half goals to improve to 50-1 on the season. Since then, however, the Wor- cester boys have dropped two in a row, including a 4-0 loss on the road against Salisbury Christian last Friday followed by another 4-0 loss to Cape Henlopen on the road on Tuesday. Against Cape, the Mallards hung with the Vikings for much of the game and trailed only 1-0 at the half. However, Cape got its offensive attack rolling with three second-half goals to decide the outcome. The Mallards will face ESIAC rival Gunston at home this afternoon, followed by three straight road games against Delmarva Christian, Salisbury School and Seaford. Decatur Golfers Edge Jags At Green Hill By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR The Stephen Decatur Athletic Boosters this week presented a check for $200 to the school’s senior class fund for winning the inaugural Decatur Way 5K earlier this month. The first-ever race pitted teams from each of the school’s classes against each other in a 5K around the campus for the benefit of Decatur’s athletic boosters program. The senior class, led by top male finisher Zach Elmer and top female finisher Chloe FauntLeroy, came in first and were rewarded this week with a check for $200 from the Boosters. Photo by Shawn Soper BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity golf team got back to its winning ways this week, edging rival Washington High at Green Hill on Tuesday for its seventh match win against just one second-place finish. The Seahawks and Jaguars have battled neck-and-neck all season with Decatur winning the first six matches of the year. Last week, however, Washington edged the Seahawks by just four strokes at the Bay Club. Decatur returned the favor on Tuesday, beating Washington by just three strokes in the team match. Decatur finished with a team-low 168, followed closely by Washington at 171. Bennett was third at 183. Andrew Urban led Decatur with a team-low 40, followed by Delaney Iacona at 42. Matt Kristick, Danny Parker and Brooks Holloway each scored 43. Bennett’s Ayden Whitehead was the match’s medalist with a low score of 36.
