SKACEL: Tell me about your rocks! Where did you get the idea to clothe these small stones?
RODRIGO: I saw crochet clothed stones in an Argentinian friend's projects page on Ravelry and I thought it was an
awesome idea! It was only this summer that I dared to try to use a tiny crochet hook to clothe stones that I collect during
trips around Iceland and to my surprise, it wasn't difficult at all!
SKACEL: What sort of materials do you use?
RODRIGO: First of all, stones. They can be any size or shape. I personally like stones that are very polished, soft and
rather regular in shape. Until now I have used mostly mercerized cotton which has a really nice lustrous appearance and
good strength. (Note from skacel: try Zitron Traum Seide for a similar effect). The thickness depends on the size of the
stone but my favorite one is n°20 that works very well on a wide range of stone sizes without looking too bulky or too
thin. I also tried using cotton quilting thread for tiny stones and it works beautifully! The result is very delicate and lacey.
Crochet hooks should match the threads. I have made all my stones with a 1mm and 1.5mm (US 12 and 8 respectively).
Finally, you need to know the basics of crochet. I highly recommend learning how to start your project with an adjustable
"magic circle" to get a much neater result.
SKACEL: Where do you like to collect stones?
RODRIGO: It is possible to find AMAZING stones almost anywhere around Iceland, from the seashore and rivers to the
Highlands. I keep my eyes open every time I am out of town. I am always searching for pretty things. It is amazing the
amount of wonderful things you can find on a beach during low tide for example: urchins, bird bones, shells, stones, etc.
