Game Night Coasters
Have you ever tried artfelt
®
? It's a unique and easy fiber craft to add to your fiber arsenal.
Our patented starch-based paper streamlines the felting process, borrowing the best from needle
felting and wet felting but offering precision and speed, even for novice felters. Coasters are a
great first project. Follow our tutorial below to have a set ready for your next game night!
1.
Step 1.
Cut your artfelt
®
Paper
to size and place on an
artfelt
®
Tackboard. There
is no right or wrong side
to the paper.
2.
Step 2.
Draft your roving and
lay on top of the paper in
your desired pattern.
Crosshatching fibers will
create a stronger felt.
3.
Step 3.
Using a felting needle,
tack the roving into
place. There is no need
to stab with abandon! If
you can lift the paper off
the board and see your
design hold its shape,
you've tacked it plenty.
4.
Step 4.
To felt your design, place
it paper side down on a
piece of plastic larger
than the paper. Totally
saturate the piece with
water using a
spray bottle.
5.
Step 5.
Fold the plastic over one
edge, and roll the paper,
roving and plastic into a
jellyroll shape. Cut the
leg off a pair of tights
and place the felt
jellyroll inside.
Tie the end shut.
6.
Step 6.
Place the jellyroll in the
dryer on medium heat
for 10 minutes. Unwrap
the jellyroll and re-roll it
in the opposite direction.
Tumble an additional
10 minutes.
7.
Step 7.
If your piece looks like
solid felt, go to step 8. If
not, re-roll it and place it
in the dryer again until
fully felted.
8.
Step 8.
Dissolve the paper away by
pouring boiling water from
a kettle directly on it. Do
this in a sink or tub and let
water drain immediately.
Allowing the piece to sit in
boiling water may make
colors run together.
9.
Step 9.
Lay felt flat to dry. Cut
coasters or shapes
as desired.
