A Lifetime of Learning
s a sophomore in college, sitting in one of many Art History classes, I remember an older woman who sat front and center—literally. She sat in the front seat in the middle row. She was retired and taking the class as an unmatriculated student. Even then, knee deep in the works of Renaissance greats like Raphael, Michelangelo, and da Vinci, I envied her. I envied her ability to listen, observe, and participate in a class about a subject she clearly enjoyed without the distraction that college life presented. I am still a few years from auditing classes myself, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t chances for me to learn each and every day. As our children settle into a new school year, whether it is the first year of preschool or the first semester of college, it is important that we remember to take advantage of opportunities to play the role of student. In this issue, we embrace learning. Introduce your children to science from what’s in stock in your kitchen; help them with math regardless of your math skills; take heed of what the soil has to teach; and embrace opportunities to manage anger and learn from losing gracefully. The PFM family wishes all of our students a wonderful school year. We hope they enjoy the subjects their teachers introduce them to and embrace their lucky role as students. Sincerely,
