Donation For Memorial
OCEAN PINES – BJ’s Wholesale Club, in partnership with the Ocean Pines Association, raised $440 for the Worcester County Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines as a part of its recent membership offer. BJ’s donated $5 of each membership fee paid as a part of the promotion to the foundation in addition to offering special benefits for new and renewing members. Over 80 area residents participated in the offer, making such a large donation possible. Teresa Travatello, director of Marketing and Public Relations for Ocean Pines, presented the check to Veterans Memorial volunteers Mary Adair and Marie Gilmore at the organization’s volunteer appreciation party at DeNovo’s in Ocean Pines on Dec. 4. “BJ’s 2013 Fuel Your Fundraiser Campaign for the Worcester County Veterans Memorial was well received,” said BJ’s Corporate Membership Sales Representative Sherry Baker. “We appreciate the opportunity to support the Veterans Memorial in its mission to honor the men and women of our military services. I look forward to working with Ocean Pines Association again in 2014 to benefit the Worcester County Veterans Memorial at Ocean Pines.”

Flood Map Open House
BERLIN – Worcester County officials in January will host a public information meeting and coastal flood risk open house with representatives of the state as well as Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials and their mapping partners to present updates to the coastal flood maps known as the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMS). The FIRMS indicate flood-prone coastal areas in Worcester County and insurance companies use FIRMS to determine the flood insurance rates for building and their contents. Worcester County is required to adopt updated maps to continue participating in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Worcester residents are urged to find their properties on the preliminary maps and learn their flood risks, get answers to their questions from county, state and FEMA officials and learn about flood insurance options from insurance specialists. To that end, the County Commissioners are urging all residents and property owners to attend to coastal flood risk open house. The open house is set for Jan. 16 at the Stephen Decatur Middle School from 6-9 p.m.

Ice-Breaking Available
BERLIN – Although the weather this week doesn’t suggest an immediate problem, bitter cold temperatures will certainly return, but the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be ready with four boats available this winter to break up ice on state waters including the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. The cleared tributaries will allow for watermen, tug boat and barge captains and marine crews to work through the winter on state waterways. Heavy ice may restrict the DNR’s ability to reach every area on the regular basis. Factors that may inhibit scheduled ice breakings include Coast Guard restrictions, weather conditions, tidal levels and boats relocating to areas of higher priority. State ice-breaking operations are financed through the state’s Waterway Improvement Fund, the revenues of which come from the 5-percent vessel excise tax when a boat is titled in Maryland. Requests for service may be faxed to John Gallagher of DNR Hydrographin Operations at 410-643-2341 or by calling 443-534-9610.

Fiscal Agent Okayed
ANNAPOLIS – The Maryland Board of Public Works has approved the state’s new role as fiscal agent for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), which is developing more rigorous state assessments aligned to the new internationally bench-marked, college- and career-ready standards being implemented statewide. In its new position, Maryland will manage the finances of the state-led consortium starting on Jan. 1, 2014. Florida previously held that role within PARCC, which is made up of 18 states plus the District of Columbia. “Maryland is committed to the development and implementation of better assessments that provide educators with meaningful, timely data on student progress and give parents more useful information on how children are progressing toward college and careers," State Superintendent Lillian Lowery said. "As part of the PARCC consortium, we are working with other states to move beyond fill-in-the-blank bubble tests to give students opportunities to think critically, solve complex problems and demonstrate their thinking. We need assessments to provide true indicators of progress and identify individual skills. Both are currently missing from state test results. All Maryland schools will field test the new PARCC exams this spring to make certain the tests are of the highest quality and they can be administered smoothly when rolled out statewide in the 2014-15 school year.
