Decatur continued to battle, just as they have done all year, and played Kent Island relatively even the rest of the way, but the damage had been done. The Seahawks got on the board late in the game on a five-yard touchdown run by P.J. Copes, followed by a two-point conversion by quarterback Justin Meekins, who dove in from two yards out. Copes and Meekins were bright spots for the Seahawks in the blowout loss. Copes carried the ball 13 times for 35 yards. Meekins was very productive at quarterback, rushing for 53 yards on four carries, while going 3-9 on completions for 44 yards. Decatur’s early season run against powerful Bayside North opponents continues this weekend with a Homecoming game against an improved Easton tonight. Seahawks Crank It Up In 2nd Half BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team continued its roller coaster season last weekend falling to host Kent Island, 42-8, on Friday to drop back to .500 with a 22 record. It’s been a season of highs and lows for the Seahawks thus far as a continued pattern of a big win followed by a loss continued. Decatur opened the season with a 30-28 win over Indian River for their first-ever win over the Indians in the long series. The Seahawks then dropped their second game to fall back to 11. Two weeks ago, Decatur got out to an early lead and held on for a huge 12-7 win over Queen Anne’s to improve to 2-1. Last week, the pattern continued with a 42-8 pasting at the hands of Kent Island, who beat Decatur for the fifth time in a row. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – It took a while to get the offense rolling, but Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity soccer team finally broke through and put county rival Snow Hill in their rear view mirror at home on Tuesday with a 6-1 win over the Eagles. Snow Hill got on the board first against Decatur on Tuesday and led 1-0 before Nick White broke through to tie the game at 1-1 at the 25:16 mark in the first half. The Decatur offense continued to apply constant pressure on the Eagles’ defensive end throughout much of the rest of the first half but could not break through. Snow Hill’s Mitchell Pruitt made big save after big save as Decatur’s relentless attack proved fruitless and the game was tied 1-1 at the half. The Seahawks got it going in the second half, however, getting goals from up and down the roster and pulled away for the 6-1 win. Zak Hosino scored twice in the second half to lead the Seahawks in scoring, while White, Alton Walker, Evan Heim and Tyler Angelo each pitched in single tallies. Decatur’s Logan Thumma recorded seven saves in the 6-1 win, while Snow Hill’s Pruitt was outstanding with 20 saves despite the loss. BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team enjoyed a big week, sweeping three games to improve to 6-1 overall on the season and 3-1 in the Bayside South standings. The week started with a 6-1 win over Snow Hill last Thursday. Jillian Petito led the offense with four goals and one assist, while Payton VanKirk and Lexi McDonough each contributed a goal and an assist. Mallory Vara also scored for the Seahawks, while Rachel Thorpe recorded seven saves. The Decatur offense continued to fire on all cylinders the next day with a 10-2 win over Wicomico. Petito again led the way with two goals and two assists, while Brigitte Ardis also contributed two goals and two assists. Rebecca Lederman and Rachel Bourne each scored twice, while Erin Smith and Liz Rougcher each added single tallies. On Monday, the Decatur girls stayed on a roll with an 11-0 shellacking of North Caroline. Lederman led the Seahawks with five goals, while Petito scored three times. Rougcher scored a goal and added an assist, while Lexi VanKirk and McDonough contributed single tallies. Worcester Boys Rebound From 1st Loss By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Worcester Prep rebounded from its first loss of the season last week with a big 5-2 win over Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) opponent Delmarva Christian on Monday. The Mallards suffered their first defeat of the season last week with a 4-0 loss to Cape Henlopen but rebounded with a resounding 5-2 over Delmarva Christian on Monday. Worcester jumped all over the Royals early on Monday and led 50 at the intermission. Delmarva Christian scored twice in the second half, but the damage had been done and the Mallards improved to 4-1-1 on the season. The Mallards play back-to-back road games against ESIAC rival Salisbury School this afternoon and Seaford tomorrow before their next home game against Sussex Tech on Tuesday. The Worcester boys finish the regular season with a road game against Gunston and a home game against Holly Grove.
