Tall Ship Starts Ocean City Stop Aug. 20
OCEAN CITY – The Town of Ocean City will be hosting a historic visit of a replica of a 16th-century galleon Aug. 20 through Sept 2. The National Air, Sea and Space Foundation Inc. is bringing the 170foot-long Galleon to the resort for visitors to come aboard and experience what life was like on the high seas in the 16th century. Ships like the Andalucia Galleon were used throughout the exploration of the New World. “We are happy to be working with the Town of Ocean City to make this event happen,” said Bryan Lilley, the chairman of the Board of the NASSF. “We appreciate all the effort made by the town because we couldn’t do this without them.” The Galleon will be docked at the bayside pier between 3rd and 4th streets through Sept. 2. Guided interactive tours will be offered daily from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., seven days a week. This is the second visit to a U.S. port that is being promoted by the NASSF, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing science, technology, engineering and mechanics awareness in the youth and public. The first visit was at Port Canaveral, Fla., where more than 30,000 people came to see the ship in May. Tickets are available for purchase at the gate or in advance at a discounted price by visiting the www.tallshipevent.com The ship has a crew of about 25 Spanish sailors, including three women. It has six decks to explore and has three masts with six sails. Volunteers are also needed to help while the ship is docked in Ocean City. Anyone interested should email volunteer@airseaspace.org.
