Dear Friends,
I continue to marvel at how Prairie School revitalizes
itself, year in and year out. Our `11/'12 school year
was no exception, proving once again the vitality of
our educational philosophy and approach as well as
underscoring the passion the entire Prairie community
brings to our mission.
As always, one senior class raises the bar and the next
class answers the challenge. The most apparent witness
of their e orts is Prairie School's graduates' successful
admission rate to the nest colleges and universities in
the United States. Last year's graduating class was awarded
the total of $7,400,000 in merit scholarships at those
schools. The more important outcomes are those that lie
beyond their next few years of study: lives rich with a love
of learning, personal and professional leadership,
and community service.
Prairie's class of 2012, the school's largest class ever,
featured 11 "lifers", all of whom I met 14 years ago as "Wee
Wogs" in our Early School. The class of 2012 amazed us
with their artistic accomplishments in the visual arts, music
and theatre, as well as with their athletic abilities. Our boys'
varsity soccer team earned its second consecutive WIAA
state championship. Our girls' varsity soccer team placed
second in the state tournament. Our musicians won 16
medals in state competition. We are extremely proud of
every Prairie graduate, each of whom embodies our spirit
and carries our ideals forward.
In a sense, I'm spoiled since I can begin my day watching
our "Wee Wogs" in the Early School wave, giggle and
cheerfully start their day. I watch energetic and intelligent
faculty-student repartee in the Middle and Upper School
classes. I never tire seeing rst-hand how young minds
respond to challenge and the opportunity to express their
growing awareness. It is magic.
My special pride is for our teachers. The word "teachers"
seems somehow to fall short when one describes our
faculty: they are incredible. Having gone into teaching
as a calling, and then a profession, one can see it in their
passion, commitment and genuine pride in each student's
success. You can see it when something suddenly clicks
in a student's mind, and when they ask hard questions.
More accurately, our teachers mentor our students your
children; nothing is more important than that. This annual
report proudly highlights two such people, now both
retired, who truly represent the faculty as a whole.
In the coming months you will learn about a special
campaign to secure Prairie School's future, provide
increased professional development and training
opportunities for our faculty, fund facility enhancements
and upgrades, and to raise additional resources to support
our scholarship and nancial aid program - thus assuring
diversity, ful lling and achieving our mission.
I am beyond grateful for your continued generosity,
trust and nancial support. Your annual donations
secure and propel excellence, and Prairie's children are
the bene ciaries. I am especially grateful for the many
volunteer leaders: parents, trustees, advisors and faculty
who helped us earn our success through the Annual Fund,
the Golf Classic, and Premiere.
Financial support continues to be very strong. Our many
volunteer leaders make it so. Thank you.
We are all part of the Prairie Mission and we all contribute
in many important ways. I am grateful for your ongoing
trust and support.
Sincerely,
Wm. Mark H. Murphy
Headmaster and President
