Prairie is its success in moving from theory into practice.
The faculty and sta are committed to the mission of the
school, and have successfully attained the goals of that
mission. Student-oriented teaching is put into action it is
not simply a conversation."
For nearly 23 years, Dr. Campbell helped guide The Prairie
School as a board member, and as the proud parent
of Prairie students. When asked what he values most
about the education his children received, and that he
participated in, he sites discipline and personalization.
"Students at Prairie are given the opportunity to develop
the skills needed to excel at a higher level. They are enrolled
in college preparatory courses, but it is deeper than the
curriculum; it is the attention given to each student's needs
and abilities that makes Prairie such a success. A great
vision was laid out for what Prairie could be, and the child-
centered perspective was present before the rst spade of
dirt had turned."
Through all of his own scholastic pursuits, Dr. Campbell's
vocation was initially guided by two Baylor University
professors. Their example motivated him to pursue degrees
in history, which proved to be fruitful throughout his career.
"The power of good teaching cannot be overestimated,"
Dr. Campbell said. "Those professors put me in a direction
that has changed my life." He sees the same being
demonstrated by teachers at Prairie, and the e ect each
one has on the students that come through the school's
doors. It is the correlation between the two that inspired
him to stay on the board until his retirement from Carthage
in August of 2012.
Dr. Campbell may have stepped away from the academic
limelight, but his thirst for learning and engaging has hardly
been quenched. After serving as the Vice Chairman of the
United Hospital System Board for many years, Dr. Campbell
was named Chairman of the Board in January of 2013, in
addition to the many other commitments he has made to
the local community. He sees every project as something to
look forward to and invest in, both for the greater good of
those around him and for his own sustenance.
In the rare moment that they are not giving of their time, Dr.
Campbell and his wife enjoy traveling the world together.
Although Barbara does not share her husband's love of
adventure vacations such as climbing the Swiss Alps, his
most recent expedition the two share an equal desire
to explore and discover. In the meantime, Dr. Campbell is
searching for what it means to be retired a new perspective
he looks forward to obtaining.
