OCEAN CITY – A Salisbury woman faces numerous charges, including leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, after striking a 6-year-old girl with a vehicle on Baltimore Avenue on Saturday afternoon and attempting to flee across the Route 50 bridge. Around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, Ocean City Police and EMS responded to the area of 19th Street and Baltimore Avenue for a report of a child struck by a vehicle. OCPD officers arrived on the scene and determined a 6-year-old child and her mother were attempting to cross Baltimore Avenue from east to west in a cross- JASMINE D. SHUMAN walk at 19th Street when the child was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound. The vehicle’s driver, later identified as Jasmine Denise Shuman, 18, of Salisbury, initially stopped after the collision, exited her car to see what had happened, but then fled the scene. Shuman was located a short time later by an OCPD foot officer as she was about to head west in her vehicle across the Route 50 bridge at North Division Street. The investigation determined Shuman was the driver of the vehicle that struck the 6-year-old girl. The child was treated at the scene by Ocean City EMS and was later flown by Maryland State Police helicopter to the University of Maryland Medical Center for Shock Trauma for further treatment. As of mid-week, the child was being treated for serious injuries related to the crash and was listed in stable condition. She reportedly suffered a fractured skull that required surgery to relieve pressure on her brain and has extensive road burns on her back. The child and her family were reportedly in Ocean City to take in the Ravens Parade on Saturday morning as part of the annual Ravens Beach Bash weekend of events. Meanwhile, Shuman was arrested and charged with failure to immediately stop at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failure to immediately return and remain at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failure of a driver involved in a bodily injury accident to furnish ID and license and failure of a vehicle driver to report bodily injury to nearest police. She was taken before a District Court Commissioner and was released on a $5,000 bond.
