OCEAN CITY – The Art League of Ocean City will celebrate the various forms of fiber art in May at their new facility, the Ocean City Center for the Arts, on 94 Street in Ocean City. A wide variety of both decorative and wearable fiber art will be on display in the galleria for the month of May. The exhibit will open with a public reception on Friday, May 3, from 5-7 p.m. and continue through May 25. The center is open from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. daily. Fiber art forms represented in the show include batiks by Betsy Hall-Harrison, quilts by Barbara Warden, woven clothing and accessories by Deborah Lewis-Idema, basketry and mixed media fiber pieces by Heidi Wetzel, painted silk by Mitzi Ash and hooked items by the Delmarva Friendship Crafters. Many of the pieces will be available to purchase. Featured May artist in residence Monika Lilley will demonstrate the art of weaving during the reception. Lilley will also be displaying her felted and knitted items in the galleria and also in her studio.
Lilley has been working in fiber arts for over 13 years and has been teaching for over 8. In 2009, she started the Upper Room Studio to supply the shore with quality fiber art supplies and fun classes. She will offer several classes at the Ocean City Center for the Arts during the month including making felted flowers on May 11, “Nuno” felted scarves on May 15, and creating needle felted sculptures on May 28-29. No experience is necessary to participate in the fiber classes and all materials will be supplied. A complete schedule of classes can be found on the Art League of Ocean City website at www.artleagueofoceancity.org. “Through everything, my goal is for children and adults to enjoy an amazing art while taking part in continuing a legacy,” said Lilley. “It’s more than just creating something beautiful and unique. It’s a way to continue our world’s traditions.” For more information, contact the Art League of Ocean City at 410-524-9433 or visit the website at www.artleagueofoceancity.org.
