Decatur Track Shines At Home Meet

BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity outdoor track teams shined at a meet the Seahawks hosted last week, taking first in numerous events and placing high in many others. Decatur hosted a Bayside Conference meet last Wednesday and dominated for the most part on its home track. On the boys’ side, Lucas Duker placed third in the 110 high hurdles, while James Phillips was fourth. Nick Molitor was second in the 1,600, while Lance Ward finished third and Gary Frick was fifth. Kyle Kelly finished first in the 40, with Dan Winters placing third. In the 3,200, Decatur’s Kevin Herbert was third and Jake Gaddis was fourth. Kelly finished third in the 200, while James Mapp was fourth. Ruben Ortega finished fourth in the 300 hurdles. In the 800, it was Dan Winters finishing second and Lance Ward finishing third. In the relays, Decatur was first in the 3,200 and first in the 1,600, while finishing third in the 400. In the field events on the boys’ side, Zach Watters was first in the pole vault, while Sonny Aroh was second and Ta’Shawn Collins was
third. Pat Phillips finished first in the shot put, while Tony Sullivan was third and Gerardo Navarro was fourth. In the high jump, it was Duker finishing second, Ben Short finishing third and Colin Gaynor finishing fourth. Sullivan was first in the discus, while Pat Phillips was fourth. Khaalid Collick was second in the long jump, while Jamel Showell was third and Duker was fifth. In the triple jump, it was Collick finishing second, Showell in fourth and Short in sixth. The Decatur girls’ also excelled in the home meet. In the 100 hurdles, Emily Cook was first, Mary Hanley was third and Emily Kolarik was fourth. Amari Harmon finished first in the 100, while Rebecca Lederman was second. Chloe FauntLeroy was first in the 1,600, while Alexandra Tushup was second. Katie Hoffman was second in the 400 and Tushup was first in the 3,200. In the 300 hurdles, Cook took fifth place. Lederman took second in the 200, while Shakirra Collick was fifth and Amari Harmon was sixth. FauntLeroy was first in the 800, while Allison Alvarado was third. In the relays, Decatur finished first in the 3,200 and second in each of the others including the 400, 800 and 1,600.
Seahawks Edge Indians At Perdue Stadium

BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team edged Indian River, 11-10, on the big stage at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium last Saturday as part of the 2nd Annual Bi-State Rivalry tournament at the home of the Delmarva Shorebirds for their ninth consecutive win. The Seahawks competed in the 2nd Annual Bi-State Rivalry tournament at the Shorebirds Stadium last Saturday featuring teams from Maryland and Delaware. The annual event affords local high school players the opportuni-
ty to play on a professional baseball diamond while allowing fans to see some of the top prep teams in the area compete. The Seahawks defeated Indian River last Saturday afternoon, 11-10, for their ninth straight victory. After losing on back-to-back days to Bayside South rivals Parkside and Bennett back on April 89, Decatur has now won nine in a row. Prior to the Indian River game last Saturday, the Seahawks beat Washington, 4-1, and Snow Hill, 12-0. The nine-game streak also features wins over Crisfield, Mardela twice, Pocomoke, Chincoteague and Wicomico.
Nearly 2,500 Compete In Half-Marathon

OCEAN CITY – The Island to Island Half-Marathon and associated 5K race were held in and around the resort area last weekend with nearly 2,500 competitors combined in the two events. Conditions were nearly ideal with clear skies and cool temperatures as just under 1,800 racers competed in the half-marathon that began at the Inlet in Ocean City and concluded at Assateague Island. Another 666 racers competed in the 5K race on the Boardwalk. For the record, Lee Kauffman of
Annapolis came in first in the halfmarathon, finishing in 1:16.42. David Vitek of Baltimore was second, while Kristen Lasko of Gaithersburg came in third overall and was the top female finisher. The Top 10 locals in the halfmarathon included Chris Llinas of Ocean Pines (82); Alyson Brabitz of Ocean Pines (102); Ed Godfrey, Salisbury (104); Matt Penrose, Snow Hill (111); Lyndsey Kanski, Ocean Pines (137); Stephanie D’Ambrosio, Salisbury (145); Craig Heiland, Salisbury (165); Christopher Powles, Salisbury (179); Casey Hafford, Salisbury (188); and Robert Schroeder Jr., Salisbury (195).
