One of the biggest challenges facing any
business in a difficult economic climate is
market competition, and when that
competition is illegal and not complying
with industry regulations then successful
trading becomes even more difficult.
In support of the legitimate fuel retail trade
in the UK, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)
is committed to tackling large-scale
criminal and commercial fuel fraud by
combining law enforcement action with
control of the sale and distribution of red
diesel, kerosene and `tied' oils.
HMRC Road Fuel Testing Units (RFTU)
operates throughout the UK and targets all
elements of the illegal supply chain from
laundering and sale, to the use of illicit fuel.
The RFTU have a rolling program of visits
to filling stations as well as targeting
huckster sites - illegal filing stations - to
test the legitimacy of the fuel sold.
People involved in fuel fraud can have their
assets seized, face fines, recovery of taxes
evaded and prosecution. In the last year
HMRC have visited 387 retail outlets and
storage sites, 57 laundering plants and
unregistered bio fuel sites and seized
nearly 2.5 million litres of illicit fuel.
Anyone with information about suspected
fuel fraud can contact the Customs Hotline
on 0800 59 5000, and help create a level
playing field for legitimate businesses and
stamp out this criminality.
