Books for hospices
This service was launched back in May 2010 in order to bring
audiobooks to a group of people arguably most in need
--those with
life-limiting illnesses under hospice care. Audiobooks can provide
welcome distraction from the pain, discomfort and anxiety experienced
by those in palliative care.
Due to the generosity of charitable trusts and companies, we have been
able to deliver more than 100 mini-libraries of audiobooks to adult and
childrens hospices across the UK, including Wales, Scotland and
Northern Ireland. By placing mini-libraries directly into hospices,
patients have easy access to great literature and the range of activities
already available to them is complemented, improving quality of life and
the community as a whole within the hospice.
The service has had a fantastic response as can be seen from the
quotes below:
"Sometimes patients feel agitated or have trouble relaxing or sleeping. Listening to a book often helps them switch off or relax.
Often distraction can help with some pain issues which in turn helps staff and patients family members to settle the patient."
Paula McLean, The Rowans Hospice
"A huge Thank You from all the children and young people at the hospice for the generous donation of the listening library. The
children love listening to the CDs prior to going to sleep. "
Joanne Reed, Acorn Childrens Hospice
