disabling conditions which make reading
difficult, if not impossible.
Listening Books member, June, speaks for all
them perhaps: "I would definitely say that the
service has had a positive impact on my life ...
having these books fills an enormous void in
reading material ... I think without them I would
suffer emotionally and mentally because they
open up new worlds to me, stimulate my interest
in all aspects of life, and also help to keep me
involved socially in local book groups--this is
very important to me. Books and reading are a
passion, but a shared passion is always more
fun, and Listening Books helps me share my
love of reading with others."
In contrast with only five years ago, we now
have no fewer than five service delivery models
for delivery of our audiobooks but, while we are
proud of this advance, we are constantly looking
to improve each listeners experience. We are
determined always to be right there, taking
advantage of each and every development as it
happens in the recording world just as the library
team are continually researching which titles to
add to our lists and what in-house recordings we
need to make. (It is an exciting experience,
incidentally, to descend to the recording studios
in the basement and to hear the gruesome
sound effects which enhance the notorious
Horrible Histories series!)
Our hospice programme has been received with
huge enthusiasm from Ipswich to Inverness and
we owe a debt of gratitude to our staff and
volunteers who have been delivering many of
our mini-libraries around the country and
showing patients how to use the machines
which come with them. Heartfelt thanks, too, to
our funders, those trusts and foundations but
also many individual donors who have made our
recent expansion possible as well as publishers
and the many other stakeholders who help
