New Tools To Ease Cancer Cluster

More than 1,000 suspected disease clusters are reported to state
health departments every year; the majority of them are suspected
cancer clusters. If you haven't already been involved in responding to
concerns about a cancer cluster, chances are good you will someday.
To address the many communication challenges that come with cancer
clusters, a group of state and federal health communicators--led
by the CDC and NPHIC--worked with epidemiologists and other
partners across the country to develop Cancer Clusters: A Toolkit for
Communicators.
"Cancer clusters present significant communication challenges for
public health officials," said Robert Jennings, NPHIC past president
and a contributor to the toolkit. "This communications toolkit provides
great guidance on how to address concerns about cancer clusters in a
very realistic and appropriate way."
The toolkit outlines the most essential communication needs
surrounding cancer clusters and the most effective ways to address
them. It includes sample scenarios, suggested outreach techniques for
various audiences, FAQs, literature resources and guidance for using
social media to educate about cancer clusters.
The items in the toolkit have been tested with focus groups to verify
that language is appropriate to use with communities that are
