MURCHISON
It takes less than two hours to
reach Murchison by road from
Nelson on State Highway 6,
the main route to either the
West Coast or Christchurch.
Murchison has developed over
recent years to become the
adventure centre of the Nelson
Region, offering jet-boating,
white-water rafting, kayaking,
horse-trekking, mountain
biking, tramping, hunting,
fishing and gold-panning
amongst other activities.
The town was born of gold
fever last century. Reminders of
its past can be found in its early
colonial architecture and the
museum.
In the museum you
can trace the stories of
nineteenth century goldminer

and the vicious twentieth
century earthquakes which
shook these quiet valleys.
Around the settlement are a
number of walks, including the

Braeburn and Johnson Creek.
Along with its many tributaries,
The Buller River is a haven for

panning.
State Highway 6 runs through
some of the most beautiful
scenery in the country,
following the course of the
river. You can cross NZ's longest
swingbridge to enjoy the
scenery, visit the earthquake
fault-line, gold-pan or take a
ride on the high speed comet-

along the route of the highway
are well worth taking and are
clearly signposted.
