At the West Coast is Farewell
Spit one of New Zealand's
most important wading bird
habitats. Cape Farewell is a
national landmark and at the
end of the gravel road is the
walking access to Wharariki
Beach. This is a spectacular
coastal landscape of massive
sand dunes, cathedral arches,
wind-formed trees and basking
fur seals.
Collingwood is the gateway to
the vast Kahurangi National
Park. The Heaphy Track is one of
NZ's Great Walks and leads you
from the Aorere Valley through
stunning and ever-changing
landscape to lush rainforests
ending at Karamea on the West
Coast.
Snow-covered mountain tops,
glacial lakes and limestone
outcrops contrast with a huge
variety of bush and beach
settings. Deserted beaches and
tracks, clear crisp days and
relaxed, friendly locals make
early spring and autumn good
seasons for exploring the many
"ins and outs" of Golden Bay.
Annual events provide a good
reason to visit, look for Gnomes
Away from Home (August),
Fireworks over Aorere (Labour
weekend), A & P show (January)
and Collingwood Summer Food
Fair (Anniversary weekend)
and the Mardi Gras parade
(February) and many more.
