GOLDEN BAY
Golden Bay's name reflects the
riches of the area: plentiful
seafood and forest resources
for the first Maori inhabitants;
then later the coal, timber, gold
and minerals sought by the
European settlers. Now it is a
mix of farming and alternate
lifestyles.
Takaka Hill safeguards the
tranquillity and hidden secrets
of Golden Bay. Over millions
of years, water has formed
a variety of explorable cave
systems. Ngarua Caves are
situated at the summit of
the "Marble Mountain" and
Harwood's Hole is world famous
for its awesome 183 metre
vertical drop.
Continue along State Highway
60 past dairy farms and Paynes
Ford and in to Takaka. To help
plan your holiday you'll find the
i-site visitor centre on the left.
Takaka is the main town in
Golden Bay where you may
choose from restaurants,
bistros, cafes and takeaways.
Painters, potters, silversmiths
and weavers are among the
many artisans who have been
drawn to the creative ambience
of the Golden Bay region.
Go totally local and sample
tar, venison, salmon, scallops,
mussels, crab, goat cheese,
honey and sub-tropical fruits.
The rushing glass-clear water
of the Te Waikorupupu Springs,
known as Pupu Springs, have
made headlines as the clearest,
freshest waters in the world.
The quiet end of Abel Tasman
Park is accessible from Wainui
Bay or by walking in to Awaroa
Inlet at low tide.
