tuesday 29th of october saw the
Countrywide property auctions team
in very unfamiliar surroundings; an
evening auction in the basement of
the iconic Cavern Club in liverpool's
beatles quarter.
the reason being, we had a very
special 1 lot auction; offering for
sale number 9 newcastle Road in
wavertree. now, 9 newcastle Road
looks on the face of it to be a modest
three bedroom, brick built, mid
terraced house; similar to thousands
of others in the city. However, 9
newcastle street holds a fascinating
and important part of liverpool's
and britain's musical heritage; the
property is the first ever house of a
certain John winston lennon.
naturally, interest was strong in the
lead up to the auction; and whilst
there had been a huge amount of
local, national and international
press coverage, no one could have
predicted what was about to ensue.
the room began to fill up well in
advance of the 6.30pm start time and
by the time the auctioneer, andrew
brown took to the rostrum, a fair sized
crowd had gathered. the property
had been marketed with a guide price
of £150-£250,000; and following
an initial bid of £150,000 there was
some brisk bidding from three parties,
taking the offers to £220,000.
whilst this was a figure well above the
reserve, the real action was just about
to start. what can only be described
as a battle royal then commenced;
an american telephone bidder and a
london investor in the auction room
went toe-to-toe all the way to the
eventual selling price of an incredible
£480,000; with the telephone bidder
emerging victorious.
whilst we have been instructed not
to reveal the identity of the winning
buyer, we can be sure that they have
secured a unique and historic item of
beatles memorabilia.
