Nocona High School National Honor Society Induction Ceremony
The Nocona High School Chapter of the National Honor Society recognized seventeen students Tuesday November 26th, during the annual NHS ceremony. The picture above shows Caleb Swofford swearing in the new members. Membership in the chapter is earned by effective demonstration of the four qualities held in high esteem by the Society: scholarship, service, character, and leadership. Senior, Cristian Lopez, as well as juniors, Dylan Barrett, MaKenzie Breeze, Madilynn Cable, Alicia Carter, Miriam Diaz, Victoria Fatheree, Kady Hackley, Lindsey Jacobson, Kolbi Klein, Mason Murphey, Rachel Parr, Ashley Peterson, Jaxon Phipps, Kelsey Pierce, Claire Walker, and Katelynn Walker were inducted into the organization. Ms. Debbie Ulibarri and Mr. Billy Whitecotton presented membership certificates and pins to the new members. Officers for 2013-2014 are Caleb Swofford, president; Reagan Barrett, vice-president; Maribel Hernandez, secretary; Shanda Kirby, treasurer; and Brittan Mitchell, reporter. Mr. Billy Whitecotton is the National Honor Society Faculty Advisor. NHS members and families were invited to a reception following the ceremony in the high school library.
Nocona High School is sending 30 students on our first PRIDE trip. PRIDE stands for Personal Responsibility in Daily Effort. The program encourages students to be good citizens inside NHS and extends beyond NHS by requiring community service hours. These 30 students served more than 250 hours in the community. Pride is alive and well at NHS and growing daily.

Hello Friends! The saying for the week is: “Today should always be our most wonderful day”. I hope that all my readers had a wonderful Thanksgiving with plenty of time to visit with your family and friends. The Specht’s made their way to Farmers Branch to enjoy family time with Kenneth Walton and all the family including aunts and cousins from near and far. I had prepared a turkey along with my sister-in-law so there was plenty to go around. It was a family potluck with everyone contributing to the feast. Jodie has been working on a family tree and she had a completed version for everyone to sit down and look through. It was a massive undertaking that she has spent the past year piecing together lots of tidbits from Ancestry.com and family interviews. I didn’t get the chance to sit down and peruse it, but my daughters were impressed. Hopefully I will get the chance when we go down to set up Kenneth’s Christmas tree as has become our tradition. Another tradition is getting up on Friday after Thanksgiving and heading to Wichita Falls for the Festival of Lights Basketball Tournament. The Ladies made a good effort but sadly came up short in the first game which put them into the consolation bracket. They came out better in the afternoon game by overcoming a talented Paducah team, which sent them back to the hardwood on Saturday morning against Archer City. It must just be getting up early in the morning but something wasn’t working as they came up short again, which eliminated the squad from the tournament. Hopefully, we can get back in our game against Henrietta this week. Work is coming along nicely on the construction at the Vashti Baptist Church. I had a chance to stop in and get a peek at the interior last week and the crew was busy hanging sheetrock. The electrical stub in was complete as well as the new framing on the Sunday school room walls. I know it will be a nice improvement to have the retractable walls for larger services. It doesn’t look like they will be quite finished in time for Christmas services but it should be ready in time for a glorious Easter Homecoming. Monday, December the 9th, will be the Christmas potluck at the Community Center. I hope that everyone who showed up for last month’s potluck will make it again along with several faces I missed seeing last month. The meal starts at 6:30 p.m. and the socializing will continue well after the last dessert is finished. We may even get in some Christmas caroling with the piano if we are lucky again. What a wonderful way to get in the Christmas spirit. After a request from Keith Menard I am dropping him from our prayer list. Keith has finished his therapy and has been cleared by his doctor which is great news for this busy retiree. I know he has one of his planes back in flying condition after it was damaged by our storm several months ago. He is also almost ready to test fly the Cherokee that he has pieced together from two damaged fuselages. I had already started calling him Commander when he was working for the county since he is very close to having several choices of what he might take to the air. What a way to enjoy retirement! I hope you and Sandy have nothing but clear skies ahead. In your prayers this week please remember Kenneth Walton, Josie Wise, Kay and Earnest Perkins, Mary Musgrove, Grover Watkins, Dewey Staley, Shirley Stovall, Sue Phillips, Wanda Molsbee, Trey Spivey, JoAnn Spivey, Betty Jo Hatfield, Bill Bartlett, B.J. Tate, Betty Allen, Verne Lawson, Garrett Nunn, G-Ma, Philip Lawson. Please remember all those from our area actively serving in the military at this time.
