The Shopper Buffalo Springs Chatter Winter has come! Baby it’s cold outside! I drove home on Friday in the sleet, and as I drove home, going down Frog Hollar, I noticed all the beautiful trees with their fall foliage. It was so pretty. I usually stick to the highway, but it was getting slick. I’m glad I took the detour. You folks on Frog Hollar have a nice drive. I don’t know about ya’ll but right before dark I noticed that I had lots of ice on my trees. I’m wondering if we might just have a long hard winter. We had a lot of emergencies at the clinic this week and were pretty busy. My heart always goes out to those families of animals that have accidents or are being euthanized. I sympathize with you. I’ve been there several times. I hope you’ve got your outside animals all bedded down with places to keep them out of the cold. I put mine in their crates in the storm shelter, with a light on and a heater, with plenty of good water and food and a bed, while I’m at work. Then at night they come into the house...all 3 cats and 2 dogs. Woof woof! Please put my granddaughter, Mika S. Sweetman, on your prayer list. She’s in boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. She’s trying to become a Marine. I’ve been hearing that she’s having some illnesses, probably from being tired, etc. Thank you to all the military for what you are doing for our beloved country, the USA. This is the time to pray for our Thursday, November 28, 2013 by Carmen Wood 3 military boys and girls and to be thankful that they are there to protect us and to serve their country. God Bless them all! This is my Thanksgiving news and it’s pretty slim, but I hope everyone of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and have a lot to be thankful for. I do. I will be meeting with Michael on Thanksgiving Day in Duncan, OK., and with Chris in Wichita Falls at his house on Friday. I’m looking forward to it, as I know all of you are looking forward to having Thanksgiving with your families. Have a happy and blessed Thanksgiving! Until next week, same day, same Shopper! Experience Works With the fast approaching holidays, our thoughts turn to our children and grandchildren, and rightly so, but seniors need to be remembered too. We at Experience Works, Inc. believe that people who are productive and active throughout their lives will have better health, increased longevity, and have a positive effect on their community. Most seniors want to be able to give back to their families, their community and their nation. They don’t want to sit on a porch swing all day. They want to work and stay involved in the joy of living. Experience Works, Inc. and the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) play a vital role in a seniors’ choice to work. Experience Works, Inc. mission statement is, “Improve the lives of older workers through community service, training and employment.” Seniors are at their best, when they are serving others, being active and staying connected. Experience Works, Inc. uses apprentice style training along with computer and classroom as a path to employment. Experience Works, Inc. places low income, mature workers in training sites, such as Non Profit organizations, Federal, State or local government agencies, where they will gain new skills or refresh their current skills. Opportunities like these help the agencies with payroll expenses and work load, as they provide training to mature workers. Mature workers take pride in learning new things, sharing their knowledge and experiences. This is, without doubt, a Win-Win for Community Service Partners and to seniors! Public and nonprofit organizations benefit from an expanded workforce that enables them to enhance their services and operations through partnerships with Experience Works. Participants typically perform a variety of tasks that would otherwise not be accomplished because of lack of staff or funding. Seniors train for approximately 20 to 21 hours a week while earning minimum wage. Experience Works, Inc. is a national non-profit organization that is funded under Title V of the Older Americans Act (OAA). Experience Works, Inc. is a grantee under the SCSEP. Our services are provided at no cost and we are an equal opportunity employer. Montague County has gone above and beyond to support Experience Works and mature workers. Next time you are in these agencies please stop by and say thank you. Family & Protective Services, Bowie, TX, Justice of the Peace Precinct #2, and ISD Montage, TX, Saint Jo Public Library, Saint Jo, TX. These wonderful agencies have been training and hiring mature workers for many years. There are many other partners, too numerous to mention that work with us and our participants. We are deeply grateful to each and every one of them. Experience Works, Inc. is just one way to touch the life of a senior, so while you are planning your holiday festivities, please remember that you too can make a difference by reaching out and touching the heart of a senior!!Won’t you join us in this endeavor?
