Vashti Community Center Launches Building Fundraiser
The Vashti Community Center is launching a building fundraiser to construct a new 3,000 sq. ft. community center to replace the original 60 year-old structure. Committee members evaluated the current structure of the building and determined that a new building is needed as repairs to the existing structure are prohibitive. The funds raised will help support the construction efforts toward this important community gathering space. For over 60 years, the Vashti Community Center has been a place of gathering for social events; whether that is for the monthly potlucks or traditional family reunions. The building serves as the Clay County Precinct #10 polling place for Vashti and the surrounding area. It has seen regular Vacation Bible School use by the Baptist Church and monthly meetings of the local Four H group. Annual meetings have included the county-wide Volunteer Fire Department and for four years, a Fourth of July “Blowout” that drew up to eight hundred celebrants. Now, the Vashti community needs your help to ensure that this important gathering place remains for future generations. It is the committee’s goal to raise the $150,000 in funds necessary through local donors and regional grants and to begin construction no later than twenty-four months from the beginning of this fund drive. There will be a fundraising kickoff potluck on Saturday, September 28th at 6:00 p.m. at the Vashti Community Center. We encourage everyone to bring a covered dish and come enjoy great food, fellowship and learn about the current building and fundraising plans and what you can do to help. If you would like to show your support while also making a difference in our community, please contact any of the committee members for more information on how to make your donation. NCTC to switch to Canvas Learning Management System
North Central Texas College has announced that it will be using a new Learning Management System (LMS) to deliver all NCTC eCampus courses by Fall 2014. NCTC will be replacing the ANGEL LMS with the Canvas LMS next fall. Canvas is the learning management system build by Instructure and offers a modern, intuitive way for educators to teach students in a digital environment. NCTC formed a committee of 21 personnel, including 18 faculty members, to create the selection process. Following 15-months of research and evaluation, NCTC chose Canvas. “The project participants unanimously selected by Canvas,” said Dr. Michael Robertson, NCTC Director of eLearning. “Canvas scored higher than all other systems tested in every area measured, including ease-of-use and intuitiveness.” Instructure launched Canvas in February 2011 and has since attracted more than 500 institutions. Today it services more than 9 million teachers and students from around the world. “Canvas enables educators to teach their discipline in a way that’s effective for them,” said Misty Frost, vice president of Marketing at Instructure. “Students today are looking for a modern educational experience that’s relevant to their world. By using Canvas, NCTC is modernizing its technology while at the same time continuing to support different learning styles.”
