The saying for the week is: “What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the Master calls a butterfly”. Several of the Clay County Precinct Four retirees and all current road hands spent Thursday night with their spouses celebrating the retirement of Keith Menard. Keith’s recent surgery sped up his retirement plans a little but he is working hard on his therapy so as not to slow down his flying. A wonderful meal prepared by Billy Tyson was followed by several who rose to recall just some of the many ways Keith’s service to Clay County will be missed. Not to miss the chance of injecting a little humor into the occasion, the current crew had enlisted the help of Sasha Kelton in preparing a caricature of Keith mounting his truck’s steps in a Menard Aircraft shirt complete with his trusty barnstormers flying helmet and goggles. Best wishes to Keith and Sandy in all their future adventures. Shelley and I returned from a short trip to celebrate our oneyear anniversary to find the Indian Gay Flowers blooming

along the roadside and in our front yard. I am sure that the Monarch Butterflies will not be far behind. In other travels this weekend to Seymour to cut up the top layer of our wedding cake with Shelley’s family, we spotted a Redtailed Hawk on the side of the road hanging on tightly to his prey. I kept waiting for the hawk to fly to the safety of the fence line but he was not going to budge from his meal. Turned out he had a hold of a large rattlesnake which was coiled around his legs. I do know that meals must be hard to come by right now based on the number of dead buzzards I am seeing in the roadway. It seems that for every dead raccoon you see there is a dead buzzard within a rocks throw. That may have been the cause of what appeared to be a safety meeting going on in the field next to a recent victim in the road. I spotted three buzzards on the ground that seemed to be listening to a lecture on proper carcass removal from an older looking bird perched on a small stump. He must have got his points in because there were no piles of feathers this time when

talented hands to see that the work is done. God’s gifts doing God’s work. The Fifth Sunday Sing has arrived again with all those voices to be raised in praise this Sunday the 29th at Newport Baptist Church. Brother Mayo informed me the singing will kick off at 6:00 p.m. so plan on arriving early to catch all the fine voices that will be giving God the glory. Please continue to remember our neighbors Roger Boyer and Fred Howard in your prayers for healing this week. In your prayers this week please remember Keith Menard, J.T. and Jane Browning, Josie Wise, Fred Howard, Bonnie Underhill, Kay and Earnest Perkins, Mary Musgrove, Grover Watkins, Dewey Staley, Shirley Stovall, Sue Phillips, Wanda Molsbee, Trey Spivey, JoAnn Spivey, Betty Jo Hatfield, Bill Bartlett, B.J. Tate, Connie Elrod, Betty Allen, Verne Lawson, Garrett Nunn, G-Ma, Philip Lawson. Please remember all those from our area actively serving in the military.
I returned. I can now share with all my readers what the Vashti Community Center is cooking up special for the 28th of September. We will be hosting a special potluck dinner to unveil the architectural plans for the new Center. Plan on bringing a special dish on Saturday the 28th at 6:00 p.m. This is a little earlier than usual but we wanted plenty of time to go over the plans. I am sure everyone will be as excited as we are at what we hope will soon be under construction. The Community Center has already received a substantial commitment to get the project started and the building committee will be making several announcements that evening. The crew began demolition of the interior of the Vashti Baptist Church this week by removing the damaged sheetrock and insulation. It is amazing how much damage this storm caused to the church. I believe they have already removed several rolloff dumpsters with various debris, with a lot more to come. Thankfully there are plenty of

Art Show coming to Bowie
“Small Town America” is the theme for the Art Show to be held on October 5, 2013. The show is sponsored by the Bowie Alliance for Education and the Arts. An award for the best on the theme is again $500. One of the awards is the “Spirit of America” started by Cpl. Matthew Broker for the 2012 show. He wanted to celebrate patriotism and the best of America. The “Spirit of America” award will be continued for the 2013 show by another military man, SPC Randall Kirkland. Both young men grew up in Bowie but do not know each other. Both are still serving their country in the military. Cpl. Matthew Broker is in the U.S. Marines and SPC Randall Kirkland is in the U.S. Army. There are cash awards in all divisions. Bowie Alliance for Education and the Arts wants every artist to enter the show to express your version of Spirit of America on October 3rd or 4th. The show is open to the public during the Chicken and Bread Days festival. Applications may be picked up at Mason Street Mall, Cup O’ Joe, and the Green Bee.
