The Shopper Thursday, August 29, 2013 13 (940) 894-2000 Visiting In Vashti Hello Friends! The saying for the week is: “Easier is not always better”. Clean up work continues all around Vashti this week as the last of the storm damage is cut up and hauled away. All of the damaged trees are no longer in the cemetery and most of the limbs are now gone from behind the Baptist Church and parsonage. A crew is busy doing framing and decking for the new roof that will soon be in place on the church as well. I will have to step inside to see what else may need repair before services resume. I know Keith Menard has a big project ahead of him in repairing damage to the wing of his plane which was damaged when the quanset hut style hanger collapsed onto the top of his Cessna. He still had one more plane to get out before demolition could begin on removing the structure from its moorings. He is already busy locating a new wing so he can get back up in the clear skies now over Vashti. We have been busy making several trips to Dallas as Shelley has been having some testing done on her right kidney. This has included two separate trips to discuss issues with various doctors and a procedure to test renal function. We went in this Monday and after speaking with the doctor about last week’s test results and now will have a reprieve for two weeks until a final test is performed to narrow down the possible diagnoses and treatment options, if any. Sometimes the only plan available is to just learn to deal with the discomfort. Hopefully we will come out with a real answer that can be achieved. During Homecoming, September 13th, there will be a wonderful reunion of Alumni of THE Bowie High School Marching Band. This event will be hosted by the decades of the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s. However, all former band students are invited to join the celebration! The Alumni will be riding a float and following the Mighty Marching Maroon Band during the Homecoming Parade. Then we will join the tailgating fun outside of Jackrabbit Stadium where we will be cooking hotdogs and doing a lot of reminiscing. The fun will continue as the Alumni follow the Band into the stadium. We will be seated next to the Band, and anyone with a horn is encouraged to play along. At halftime, the Alumni will line the football field and the Majorettes will be strutting their stuff to the BHS “Fight Song”. Also at halftime, the Charter inductees of THE Bowie High School Band Hall of Fame will be inducted. After the Homecoming game, the Alumni will be gathering at the Community Room for snacks and fellowship. There will be films of previous UIL Marching Contest, and lots of memorabilia. We encourage all former band students to join in the fun, and help raise money for the current Mighty Marching Maroon Band. Anyone that is unable to participate in the festivities is encouraged to make a donation to: Legend Bank, C/O The Bowie High School Band Alumni, PO Box 1081, Bowie, TX 76230. All I can say is that ice cream made the first day of school better. I made a point of having a couple of choices of Blue Bell in the freezer when the girls arrived home. For some reason the calendar at the Specht’s showed that today was supposed to be the end of the world. Thankfully it didn’t turn out that way. Let the homework begin and may all your papers be turned in on time too. Just remember to keep an eye out for all the children making the trek to school or waiting for the bus in the morning. I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Labor Day Holiday. Be safe on the roads if you are traveling and safe on the water if that is in your plans for this weekend.
