Balloon Spectacular set for Gainesville
The second weekend in September 2013 will truly be a “spectacular” one in North Texas as over 25 hot air balloons take to the sky and Texas country singer/ songwriter Pat Green takes the stage as part of North Texas Medical Center Foundation’s ‘The Sky’s the Limit’ Balloon Spectacular September 13th15th in Gainesville. Now in its second year, the event has been expanded to provide additional activities during the day, filling the time between scheduled hot air balloon events, which take place in the early morning and early evening. “This year, any time will be a good time to come out to our festival,” said Kristi Rigsby, Executive Director of the NTMC Foundation and event coordinator. “We will have activities going all day – each day!” Expanded live entertainment, a wine tasting event, a supersized Kidz Zone and a two-hour air show Saturday afternoon are just some of the activities added to this year’s festival. The family-friendly weekend event begins Friday afternoon, September 13th, at the Gainesville Municipal Airport with gates opening at 4 p.m. There will be live music on the Budweiser Sky Stage with performances at 5:00, 6:30 and 8 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., hot air balloons will rise from airport grounds in a mass ascension as they begin the first of three competition flights. They will return to the field at 7:30 p.m. for a traditional balloon glow. This event features the balloons tethering on the field and lighting their burners to create a beautiful, sparkling spectacle of color on the ground –a photographer’s dream. Also featured on Friday and Saturday evenings during the Balloon Spectacular are tethered hot air balloon rides at $20 each. The tethers take riders approximately 40 feet in the air, while still anchored securely to the ground. Other activities include a display of military vehicles courtesy of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association, a multitude of merchandise and information booths, an interactive children’s inflatable play zone, displays and plenty of delectable festival foods. Grab some chairs and a blanket and stake your spot. Gates close at 10 p.m. On Saturday, September 14th, activities begin early as the gates open at 7 a.m., with balloons flying in to the airport from outside launch sites until 9:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., live entertainment begins on the Sky Stage. WBAP Radio personalities will be making a personal appearance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the War Birds Air Show will wow the crowd in the early afternoon. The evening session begins with a mass ascension and flyout of balloons at 6 p.m. At 7:30, the balloons will glow once more before handing over the spotlight to the evening entertainment, Texas country singer/songwriter Pat Green, who will take the Budweiser Sky Stage at 9 p.m. Gates close at 11 p.m. Sunday morning will be the time to bring the family to catch one more glimpse (and photo) of the gorgeous cloud skimmers as the balloons fly over targets at the airport between 7:15 and 9:30 a.m. The rest of the day will be spent enjoying local singers, dancers, choirs and bands. Bring a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the grounds. The Kidz Zone, merchandise and food vendors will all be available until the event closes at 5 p.m. Daily admission is $5. Children under 42 inches are admitted free. All proceeds go the North Texas Medical Center Foundation, for the benefit of North Texas Medical Center in Gainesville. Advance tickets will be available beginning Monday at North Texas Medical Center, all First State Bank locations in North Texas and American Bank locations in Gainesville and Whitesboro. You can also purchase tickets online at www.theskysthelimit. org. All activities for The Sky’s The Limit are weatherpermitting. All times are approximate and schedule may change without notice.
