Library News Fauquier County Public Library Kicks Off 2013 Summer Reading Program ummer reading programs put tools into the hands of children and their families to ensure year-round learning and a love of reading. Research indicates students experience significant learning losses during the summer months, but those who read during the summer retain skills better than those who don’t. Children up to 5th grade should prepare to Dig into Reading, while children entering 6th grade or higher will go Beneath the Surface as part of two eight-week programs presented by public libraries. The programs are free, with interesting activities and guest performers to make learning and reading fun. “Our annual Summer Reading Program is a great way to keep kids reading throughout the summer,” says Jennifer Schultz, Fauquier County Public Library’s Youth Services Librarian. “Whether your child is into theatrical performances, animals, crafts, or science, we’ll have programs guaranteed to make them view the library as THE fun place to be during the summer. We also have special programs just for the 6th grade crowd and up, such as a pottery class, a Hobbit movie party, a CSI program in partnership with the sheriff ’s office. There really is something for every child, no matter what their interests are!” In 2012, over 1,700 students registered for Fauquier County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program and read a recordsetting 42,000 books. Registration for the 2013 program opens at all Fauquier County library locations June 1 and programs and activities begin June 15. All programs and activities are free.
