Democrat Tom Wilson this week filed for the District 5 Worcester County Commissioner seat currently occupied by Republic Judy Boggs. Boggs announced earlier this fall she would not seek re-election. Thus far, no other candidates have emerged for the district. The only other Worcester County Commissioner district for which a candidate has formally filed is District 1, or the south end, where incumbent Republican Merrill Lockfaw has expressed his intent. In the House of Delegates District 38C race, Democrat Mike Hindi and Republican Mary Beth Carozza have formally filed in the newly created district that includes Ocean City, much of northern Worcester County and a section of eastern Wicomico County although some other candidates could emerge. Republican Michael James has hinted at an attempt at the seat, and this week Charlene Elliott Carr informally announced she would seek the seat although she has not formally filed. For individuals thinking about quitting smoking cigarettes, Nov. 21 might be the best day to do it. The Great American Smokeout Day might just offer the support needed by knowing other smokers are giving up cigarettes at least for one day. To assist local residents in the attempt, the Worcester County Health Department will be distributing free Quit Smoking kits to several locations including the Berlin Health Center, the Center 4 Clean Start, the Pocomoke Health Center, the Snow Hill Health Center, the WACS Center and the Worcester County Dental Clinic. Residents attempting to quit are encouraged to make a firm commitment and set a date, enlist some support, drink lots of water, munch on low-calorie snacks, throw out ashtrays and cigarettes, vacuum the car, wash clothes and air out the house. Smokers hoping to quit are also encouraged to participate in any one of several physical activity and nutrition programs offered by the health department including the Just Walk Berlin one-mile walk scheduled for Nov. 9. Those needing more support are encouraged to join one of the county health department’s cessation classes. For more information about the classes, call 410-632-0056.
