Snow Hill’s FiberFest Offers Workshops This Year
SNOW HILL – On Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the Julia A. Purnell Museum in Snow Hill will host its annual FiberFest Textile Arts Festival, featuring demonstrations throughout the day of traditional fiber techniques as well as vendors selling fiber art supplies and handcrafted items perfect for gift-giving. Steve Breeding of Shepherd's Hope Farm in Harrington, Del., will demonstrate sheep-shearing throughout the day. The sheep are being generously provided by All Seasons Farm in Princess Anne. Vendors include Oakwold Gardens, Nancy Ferguson Wool, Ocean Breeze Alpacas, The Wool Farm, Upper Room Studio, Island Yarn Boutique, and The Fine Needle and more. There will be plenty to do for visitors of all ages. Children will enjoy meeting live fiber-bearing animals, and the museum will provide free craft activities for children. At 11 a.m., fiber artist Nancy Ferguson will present a free demonstration of natural dyeing methods using native plants. Along with FiberFest, the museum will display the Delmarva Needle Art Show & Competition inside. The exhibition which includes quilts, embroidery, knitting and more is on display through Oct. 31. Visitors can cast votes for their favorite works to determine the Viewers' Choice winners. Prizes have generously been donated by Sea Needles in Bethany Beach, Del., and A Little Bit Sheepish in Berlin. New for 2013, three workshops will be offered as part of FiberFest. Snow Hill artist Barbara Nelson will teach a workshop on making a market tote basket. Participants will learn basic basket-making techniques and create their own basket perfect for shopping or taking to work. The cost of $45 includes supplies and instruction. The workshop runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Oct. 12. A workshop on learning to use the spinning wheel will be offered from 3-4:30 p.m. Fiber artist Monika Lilley of Upper Room Studio will help participants master the basic spinning of single- and double-ply yarns. Spinning wheel history and maintenance will also be taught. The fee of $55 includes materials and wheel use. Knitters will have the opportunity to learn to make mitered squares in a workshop taught by published knitting designer Stacy Mitchell of The Fine Needle. This workshop runs from 2-4 p.m. and costs $25. Pre-registration is needed for the workshops and space is limited. To register, please contact the museum, 410-632-0515.
