urseries and
children's spaces are
so much fun to create
- and at the same time
can be a little daunting!
As an Interior Designer
specialising in children's
rooms and nurseries it's my
job to create
one-of-a-kind rooms for
families and there are a
few fail-safe tips I can
share with you if you
decide to go it alone.
One of the first places I
start is with the colour
palette - by deciding
on the colours first and
repeating this colour
palette throughout the
room puts you on the right
track to designing a stylish
space from the outset.
The colours can be used
for your bedding, prints,
rugs, accessories, soft
furnishings and even your
walls. Mixing patterns and
prints within this palette ties
the room together without
it looking too matchy.
For my clients I love to
include wallpaper, decals
or paint effects to give the
room WOW factor.
This diamond pattern
(below right) was easily
created by painting the
walls a neutral colour,
then masking off a centre
panel around the cot, with
diagonal strips of masking
tape in both directions. The
pattern was then painted
over in a sunny yellow.
and when the tape was
removed this eye-catching
pattern was the result! If
you aren't keen on applying
wallpaper or painting (or if
you are renting) there are
some fantastic removable
wallpapers available and
they can really transform a
room - with no mess!
When decorating on a
budget I always suggest
to clients to splurge on
furniture items (such as
cots that convert into
toddler beds) and storage
solutions that will last
the distance, then save
on accessories that can
be easily (and cheaply)
updated as your child
grows older. Etsy.com is
a great source for unique
items such as cushions,
bedding, art prints and
accessories.
