British Film Insititute Marcello Mastrioanni's and Jeanne Moreau, whose relationship is challenged when Mastrioanni begins to rekindle a previous affair with a young lover, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. What drives the couple apart, however, may be what unites them in the end. By dissecting the mechanics of a marriage, Antonioni directs his critique from the specific to the general, transforming this failing marriage to a critique of the apathy and alienation of modern society. |
