Library News Fauquier County Libraries Books: Gifts that can be opened again and again By Lisa Pavlock, Public Information Coordinator, Fauquier County Public Library The holiday season is a time when many give gifts to their friends and loved ones. Often that generosity extends to the organizations that make a positive impact on a family or individual as well. It is through this spirit of giving that many patrons give a gift to their library through the donation of a book to be added to the Fauquier County Public Library’s collection. The library’s own wish list Books make great gifts – but which to choose? Is there an avid reader on your holiday list, or a child or teenager with whom you want to share your love of reading? Books make great gifts, but with so many to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide which book to give. To help, library staff have compiled lists with suggestions for good reads to buy as gifts for children, teens and adults. Look for these lists at any Fauquier County Public Library. Give to the library when you give to others Beginning in late November, festive holiday trees are on display at all Fauquier libraries, adorned with ornaments bearing book titles the library would like to add to its collection. When you purchase a book for the library you will receive a letter of acknowledgement, and a book plate bearing your name is placed in the donated book. Donations may also be made in memory or in honor of a friend, family member, teacher, or any other significant person in your life. Honorees or their families will be notified of your donation, and a book plate will be placed in the item purchased. Prince William County Library System Welcomes New Director The Library Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Dr. Connie Gilman has been appointed as Director of the Prince William Public Library System. Dr. Gilman was unanimously selected by the Library Board from among 39 applicants for the position. Dr. Gilman brings to this position a long history of library experience and service to the community: • Currently branch administrator of the Chinn Park Library • Has worked in the Prince William Library System for 23 years • Has worked at the University of Virginia, taught courses at Washington University in St. Louis, and worked as a school librarian • Past President of the Virginia Library Association • Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Northern Virginia Community College, serving on that Board for 8 years • Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Kentucky and a PHD in Higher Education from the University of Virginia • Serves on the committee working with the architect on the design of the two new libraries 6 Piedmont Family Magazine 2013 • Issue 6
