students pass an exam because
you have helped them or when
they are doing an air exercise that
you have taught them and they
get it right. Seeing the happiness
on their faces and knowing you
have passed on your knowledge
to them really makes all the hard
work and effort worth it."
Working in an industry that
is quite strongly dominated by
males, Dominique says she hopes
to give the aviation industry a
little more female representation,
but says she does enjoy being
the only female pilot at Ayre.
"There is never a dull moment
around a group of males, but we
really do need more females in the
industry especially instructors. I
think the industry is still dominated
by males because women often
don't consider flying as a career
path suitable for them. It isn't a
widely advertised profession."
Dominique's advice to aspiring
pilots is never to let anyone tell you
that you can't do it - especially
if you are a woman. "If you think
flying is something you want to
pursue you need to be willing to
put in a lot of hard work and be
willing to learn. They say you never
stop learning in this industry and
nothing comes easy so you really
need to have the passion for flying."
Asked what her best flight has
been to date, Dominique says it
was when she took her dad flying
for the first time, "I was really
excited to finally take my dad
flying. The flight went really well
and he seemed to enjoy it. After
we landed my dad gave me a hug
and told me how proud he was of
me. My dad seeing me flying the
plane and him being so proud was
a moment I don't think I'll forget."
Commenting on air shows,
Dominique says it was only once
she started flying that she truly
began to appreciate air shows and
all the work that goes into the
performances. The air show is
also a really good opportunity to
show people the school, advertise
flying and answer questions people
have. "Hopefully we get a few new
students enrolling at the school."
Dominique ultimately wants to
have the opportunity to experience
as many different types of flying-
related jobs as possible, so that she
can learn as much as possible about
the industry. One day she hopes to
fly for an international airline and
from what we can see she is well
on the way to getting there. I was
impressed with her overall flying
knowledge and she seems to be a
great, easy going person to talk to. ·
