Question Time: the inside gossip from MQ clerks in 2012/2013 This section is vital for a glimpse into the real world of a summer clerk. LESLIE MAROUN – K&L GATES There are many firms that offer summer clerkships, how did you determine which firm was the right one for you? The two aspects I looked at in a firm were its practice areas and its culture. I gleaned what I could from the firms’ websites and online legal news sources but the better insight came from talking to people that worked in law, such as the odd family friend-lawyer or classmates who worked as paralegals. After meeting lawyers at interviews and cocktail parties (which are sometimes part of the interview process), I’d email them for coffee. More often than not, they were willing to meet up and chat about their firms. How did you find the interview process? Were you asked anything unexpected? I was nervous before each interview, but I expected that. I was prepared enough so that no question was really unexpected, but I did receive unexpected feedback from my first interview. I thought it had gone really well as it was very laid back and we chatted about everything from action movies to backpacking in Europe. I didn’t get an offer from that firm, so I asked for feedback (which is highly recommended). My interviewers said that the interview was purposefully laid back, allowing the better candidates to take control of the interview and show the interviewers how they fit the firm. What was the most challenging aspect of your clerkship experience? I was surprised at the amount of responsibility I was given in the clerkship. After receiving tasks, it was a challenge knowing when it was appropriate to seek help and knowing when I should carry on and be confident with my abilities to find answers to my questions myself. Working 9am-5pm, 5 days a week was also a shock to the system, not having done that before and especially not being a coffee drinker. What did you learn that you previously knew nothing or very little about? The clerkship gave me invaluable experience in working in a commercial law firm, especially since I had never before worked in law. I was amazed at the vast range of practice areas, from construction and workplace relations to wind farms and sports law. I also learnt how to sew so that K&L Gates was represented by the finest costumes at the numerous themed clerkship parties. Did your clerkship help you make any decision/s about possible directions your career might take? The clerkship gave me an insight into various legal paths, allowing me to work with solicitors, barristers, mediators and even a community legal centre, for which I am very grateful. Having been offered a graduate position and having happily accepted, my clerkship at K&L Gates definitely provided me with a career direction that I look forward to pursuing. 26 Clerkship Guide 2013
