SOPER SPORTS EDITOR HAPPY HOUR SPECIALS BAR FOOD & DRINKS ALL DAY LONG SUNDAY, DEC. 22 • 4:25 P.M. BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team will hit the ground running after the holiday break next week when the Seahawks host the annual John Coleman Holiday Tournament on Friday, Dec. 27 and Saturday, Dec. 28. The annual tournament, named for long-time Worcester County Public Schools Administrator John Coleman, has become one of the highlights of the holiday basketball tournament schedule over the years although its configuration has been altered several times. For years, the Coleman Tournament featured the boys’ and girls’ varsity teams from the three Worcester County public schools with three at-large invitees with the host site rotating between Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke. For a few years, the tournament alternated between an all-boys and all-girls event featuring the three county schools and at-large invitees. For the last couple of years, however, the tournament has strictly been an all-girls event featuring Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke and this year will be no different. Next weekend, Decatur will play host to the annual Coleman Tournament on Friday and Saturday and will compete in a round-robin format with Snow Hill, Pocomoke and atlarge invitee Northhampton. The action starts with Decatur hosting Northhampton at 2 p.m. on Friday and the rest of the games will be determined by what happens on the court. Last year, the Decatur girls swept their two games, beating Snow Hill, 77-46, in their opener before edging Pocomoke, 55-45, in their second game. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR SALISBURY – Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team, along with several other teams from the Bayside Conference, will compete next week in the 4th Annual Governor’s Challenge Holiday Basketball Tournament featuring some of the top teams from Maryland against some of Delaware’s best. For years, the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center has hosted a holiday basketball tournament featuring some of the best prep teams from around the region between Christmas and New Year’s, but the stakes have been raised in recent years. Three years ago, for the first time, the tournament was renamed the Governor’s Challenge after Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley issued a challenge to Delaware Gov. Jack Markel with a Maryland Smith Island cake on the line against a Delaware peach pie for the winner in the head-to-head competition between schools from both states. Next week, the 3rd Annual Gov- ernor’s Challenge will be held again featuring some of the top teams from Maryland including a strong representation from the Eastern Shore against a tough field of teams from Delaware. Decatur will be among the teams competing from the Bayside South Conference, along with Crisfield, Bennett, Mardela, Parkside, Pocomoke, Snow Hill, Washington and Wicomico. Delaware teams in the field include Cape Henlopen, Delmar, Christiana, Dickinson, Indian River, Laurel, Milford, Seaford, Sussex Central and Woodbridge. Decatur will face Baltimore powerhouse Dunbar in its first game next Friday at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center at 5 p.m., and will face Delaware’s Dickinson in its second game of the tournament at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to the games on the court, there will also be a Slam Dunk contest featuring six of the top dunkers in the tournament, as well as a Three-Point contest featuring some of the top shooters in the field. The festivities will also include fan contests and other giveaways.
