SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity basketball team routed visiting Holly Grove, 67-32, on Monday to improve to 4-1 on the young season. After falling to Salisbury Christian, 51-49, back on Dec. 3, the Mallards have now reeled off three straight wins including two over Greenwood Mennonite in a homeaway series last week and the 6732 win over Holly Grove at home on Monday. On Dec. 5, the Mallards cruised past Greenwood, 60-36, and followed that with another win over Greenwood on the road last Friday, 52-42, in a game that was not as close as the score appears. Worcester led 17-7 after one quarter, but Greenwood played the Mallards relatively even in the second quarter and Worcester took a 26-15 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, Worcester settled the issue with an 18-8 run to take a 44-23 lead into the final quarter. In the fourth, Greenwood mounted a comeback largely against the Worcester reserves and outscored the Mallards 19-8 in the period, but the damage had been done and the gamed ended at 52-42. Against Holly Grove on Monday, Worcester got out to an early lead again and never looked back, winning 67-32 at home. The Mallards were scheduled to play Chinco-teague on the road on Wednesday in the last game before the holiday break and will return to action against the Ponies again at home on Jan. 7. BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity basketball team enjoyed a successful week, beating Greenwood Mennonite and Holly Grove to improve to 4-1 on the season. Last Friday, the Mallards cruised by Greenwood Mennonite, 57-20. Sophie Brennan and Frankie Willing led the Mallards in scoring with 14 points each. The win over Green-wood was the second successive games. Last week, the Mallards beat Greenwood, 60-8, at home. Back in action on Monday, the Worcester girls routed Holly Grove at home to continue their hot streak. Already ahead 10-0 in the first, Allie Greer scored on a layup to increase the Mallards’ lead to 12-0 with 3:40 remaining in the first. After Holly Grove got on the board with a pair of free throws at the 3:07 mark, Kristen Shriver scored on a fast break lay-up to push the lead to 14-2. Brennan scored on a long jumper with 2:14 remaining in the first to extend the lead to 16-2, then stole the inbound pass and converted the quick lay-up to push the margin to 18-2. Holly Grove went to the line with about a minute remaining in the first and missed the front end of a oneand-one but rebounded the shot and converted the lay-up to cut the lead to 18-4. Lilly DiNardo converted a long jumper for the Mallards as time expired in the first quarter to extend the lead to 20-4 after one period. In the second, neither team got much going offensively. Brennan made a lay-up at the six minute mark in the second, and followed that up with another fast break layup to push the lead to 26-4. Just before the half expired, Worcester’s Maura Smith grabbed a rebound and converted the put-back to push the Mallards’ lead to 28-4 at the intermission. In the second half, Worcester continued to build its lead as Holly Grove could not find a way to score against the tough Mallard defense. Holly Grove matched their point total from the first half and finished with eight points, while Worcester cruised to the 50-8 win. Since falling to Salisbury Christian, 28-27, back on Dec. 3, the Mallards have now won three straight by a combined score of 167-36. The Mallards finished the first part of the schedule with a home game against Saints Peter and Paul on Thursday in a game played too late to be included in this edition.
