SOPER SPORTS EDITOR Decatur Steamrolls Bennett, 49-0 BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s boys’ varsity soccer team edged Salisbury Christian, 2-1, last Friday to capture the ESIAC tournament championship. Last Wednesday, the Mallards beat Holly Grove in the semifinals, 3-2, to advance to the ESIAC championship game. Owen Nally, J.B. Loomis and Brian Trupo each scor-ed single goals as Worcester ad-vanced to the ESIAC tournament final against Salisbury Christian on Friday. The Mallards scored early and late to win the conference championship. With 21 minutes remaining in the first half, Ryan Nally faked a shot and slipped a pass through the defense to J.B. Loomis, who then found Jack Marshall open. Marshall fired a shot past the Salisbury Christian keeper to give Worcester a 1-0 lead. Salisbury Christian scor-ed on a corner kick to tie the score at 1-1 in the second half. Worcester took the lead for good on a nice assist from Owen Nally to Ryan Nally, who fired a low shot to the right corner to put the Mallards ahead, 2-1. Worcester keeper Isa-iah Nsah was outstanding all day, recording 13 saves. With under 30 seconds left, Nsah made one of his biggest saves of the day, diving to stop a shot to the upper corner to preserve the 2-1 win and the ESIAC title. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team steamrolled Bennett, 49-0, last week for their third straight win to move into the fourth playoff spot for the time being. After falling to Easton, 28-14, on Homecoming in early October, the Seahawks have won three in a row to improve to 5-3 on the season and increase their chances for a postseason berth in the 3A-South tournament. After the loss to Easton, the Seahawks beat North Caroline, 206, Wicomico, 29-8, and now Bennett, 49-0, last Friday. When the state districts were realigned this year, Decatur was moved to the 3A-South and is now competing with several teams from southern Maryland for one of four playoff berths in the region. After last weekend’s games, Decatur now has 30 total team points, good enough for the fourth and final spot. Thomas Stone is third with 34 points, Westlake is second with 36 and Huntingtown leads the 3ASouth standings with 50 points. The Seahawks finish the regular season with Parkside tonight, followed by Snow Hill in the annual finale next weekend. Against Bennett, Decatur got out to an early lead on its first possession on a 54-yard touchdown run by Demond Henry to go up 7-0. Decatur then went on a 63-yard drive capped off with an 11-yard touchdown run by P.J. Copes to make it 14-0. Copes then scored his second touchdown of the game on a 19yard TD pass from quarterback Justin Meekins to put the Seahawks up 28-0 at the half. In the third quarter, Copes scored again on a 63-yard touchdown run to make it 35-0 and set in motion the running clock. Decatur’s Dryden Brous made the most of his opportunities late in the game, rushing for 103 yards on just two carries and two touchdowns to close out the 490 win over the Clippers. BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s varsity field hockey team completed its perfect 14-0 season last week with a victory over Saints Peter and Paul, 3-0, in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) tournament championship game. The Mallards ran the table in the regular season, finishing a perfect 12-0 and earning the top seed in the ESIAC tournament. In the tournament semifinals last Wednesday, the Mallards cruised past Salisbury School, 5-0, to reach the championship game. Against Salisbury School, Alison Greer led the way with two goals, while Jordie Loomis and Meg Lingo each scored single goals. The semifinal win earned the Mallards a return trip to the ESIAC championship game and a rematch with Saints Peter and Paul. Last year, Worcester edged the Sabres, 3-2, in the ESIAC title game. Last Friday, the Mallards made it two in a row, downing Saints Peter and Paul, 3-0, in the championship game. Worcester Girls Fall In ESIACFinal By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity soccer team fell to Saints Peter and Paul, 3-0, in the ESIAC tournament championship game last Friday. The Mallards enjoyed another successful regular season and finished as the top seed in the ESIAC tournament. Last Wednesday, the Worcester girls routed Salisbury School, 7-0, in the semifinals. Lilly DiNardo led the Mallards with four goals, including three in the first half. Julia D’Antonio, Laura Issel and Maggie Coutu each added single tallies. The semifinal win over the Dragons set up a rubber match with Saints Peter and Paul. The Mallards split the regular season series with the Sabres, winning 1-0 and losing 2-1. Last Friday, the Sabres got the upper hand, beating the Mallards, 30, in the championship tournament final. Decatur Girls Bow Out Of States By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR Seahawks Cruise Past Northeast To Advance By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity soccer team cruised past Northeast of Anne Arundel County, 5-1, on Tuesday to advance to the 3A-South Section I final this afternoon. The Seahawks entered 3A-South Section I tournament as the number-two seed and earned a firstround bye. On Tuesday, Decatur beat Northeast, 5-1, to advance to the sectional final and will face top-seeded Northern in Calvert County this afternoon. Northern advanced to the sectional final by beating fifth-seeded Huntingtown in the second round. BERLIN – Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team bowed out of the state Class 3A-South tournament on Tuesday, falling to topseeded Huntingtown, 4-3, on the road. The fourth-seeded Decatur girls took care of business last week, beating fifth-seeded Northeast, 7-4, to advance to the Section I semifinals. Jillian Petito and Rebecca Lederman each scored two goals, while keeper Rachel Florek recorded 10 saves. The win advanced Decatur to the section semifinals on the road on Tuesday against top-seeded Huntingtown. Despite playing what Coach Misty Bunting called one of their best games all season, the Seahawks fell, 4-3. Petito scored two goals and Lederman added a single goal. Florek was again outstanding in goal, recording 20 saves.
