SOPER SPORTS EDITOR Mallards Fall In Volleyball Opener By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR BERLIN – Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity volleyball team lost its season opener last week, falling to Mount Carmel, 3-0, at home to start the season. The Mallards lost three sets to Mount Carmel, but were competitive in each. Worcester fell 25-17, 2518, and 25-21 in the three-game match. Claire Stickler led the Mallards with six digs, five kills and three aces, while Cecily Sass pitched in seven assists and five kills. The Mallards are back in action early next week with a pair of road matches against Greenwood on Monday and Holly Grove on Tuesday. BERLIN – Decatur’s varsity football team got a significant monkey off its back last weekend, beating Indian River, 30-28, on Friday for its first-ever victory over the Indians in the long series. Over the years, Decatur had never beaten Delaware powerhouse Indian River, although the series has almost always been competitive. The Seahawks put the long streak to an end last Friday, however, with a dramatic 30-28 win in the season opener for both teams. Led by P.J. Copes, who ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, the Seahawks built a 14-0 lead at halftime. Indian River cut the lead to 14-9 in the third quarter on a touchdown and a safety, but the Decatur offense responded with a touchdown by Andrew Borradaile to extend the lead. Decatur led 30-22 late in the fourth when it attempted to put the game away for good. The Seahawks pulled off a fake punt to extend a late drive, but the play was nullified by a penalty and the ball turned over to Indian River. The Indians drove down to score with 46 seconds left in the game to cut the lead to 30-28, but the Seahawk defense stuffed the two-point conversion attempt which would have tied the game and held on for the 30-28 upset win to go 1-0 to start the season. The talented, athletic Seahawks will likely find out just how far they can go during a tough stretch against Bayside North powers over the next few weeks. Decatur plays Queen Anne’s at home tonight, followed by road games against Cambridge-South Dorchester and Kent Island before returning home against Easton on Oct. 4. Marlin Club Looks To Even Challenge Cup Decatur Golfers Win, Improve To 4-0 By SHAWN J. SOPER SPORTS EDITOR OCEAN CITY – The Ocean City Marlin Club will seek to even the decades-long series with its friendly rivals from Cape May this weekend when the two clubs compete for the annual Challenge Cup for the 35th time. The Challenge Cup, which pits teams of boats from the Ocean City Marlin Club against teams of boats from the Cape May Marlin and Tuna Club, officially began in 1979 as formal competition between the friendly rivals which share the same canyons off the coast of the resort. The two rival clubs meet each September to compete for the Challenge Cup and bragging rights until next year. Last year, Cape May edged Ocean City in one of the closest tournaments ever to take a 15-14 lead in the series. If either team wins the tournament three years in a row, that cup is retired and remains in the possession of the victors, while the losing club bucks up for a new cup. Ocean City had won two years in a row going into last year and was looking to retire the cup and take an edge in the series, but Cape May won and now leads the series 15-14. The tournament officially got started yesterday with registration and a captains meeting, but the action offshore gets going today with the first of two fishing days. The winner will be awarded the Challenge Cup after the last day of fishing on Saturday. By SHAWN J.
